Chapter 10 - VANESSA'S MISSING MEMORY

Vanessa woke in protective custody on Christmas morning.
She expected Dominic to send lawyers.
Instead, Elena arrived.
Vanessa stared.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elena placed a copy of Camille's ledger on the table.
“Project Winter.”
Vanessa's face changed.
“I don't know what that is.”
“Your name appears beside it.”
Vanessa looked at the page.
Her hands began shaking.
“My father used to call something Winter.”
Elena sat.
“What?”
“I don't know.”
“Try.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“When I was younger, I had headaches.”
“What kind?”
“Bad.”
“Treatment?”
“Doctors.”
“Names?”
“I don't remember.”
Elena stared.
“Vanessa.”
“I said I don't remember.”
Her frustration looked real.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“There are years I barely remember.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“What years?”
“Seventeen to nineteen.”
The exact period after Alexander Vale's death.
Dominic entered quietly.
Vanessa saw him.
Pain crossed her face.
“Dominic.”
He remained near the door.
“We need the truth.”
“So do I.”
Vanessa looked down.
“My father used to take me to a clinic near Denver.”
“What clinic?” Elena asked.
“Closed now.”
“Why?”
“He said anxiety.”
Dominic and Elena exchanged a glance.
Dr. Julian Price.
Not yet connected to them, but similar pattern.
Manipulation.
Memory.
Control.
Vanessa continued.
“I remember a Christmas party.”
“What year?”
“The year Alexander died.”
Dominic went still.
“You were there?”
“I think.”
Elena leaned forward.
“What did you see?”
Vanessa pressed fingers against her temples.
“A man bleeding.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“My father?”
“I don't know.”
“Who else?”
Vanessa began breathing faster.
“My father.”
“Harold?”
“Yes.”
“And Camille.”
Dominic stared.
Vanessa's eyes opened.
“She gave me something.”
“What?”
“Pills.”
A memory fragment returned.
Camille saying:
You didn't see anything.
Vanessa began crying.
“Oh God.”
Dominic looked away.
Another person used.
Another child shaped by adult secrets.
Elena asked:
“What is Project Winter?”
Vanessa shook her head.
Then Hannah entered carrying a box recovered from their father's estate.
“Maybe this.”
Inside were medical files.
PROJECT WINTER.
Psychological conditioning protocols.
Sedatives.
Memory suppression.
Behavioral reinforcement.
Not sophisticated mind control.
Something uglier and more plausible.
Drugging traumatized witnesses.
Coaching replacement memories.
Isolating them.
Repeating lies until certainty eroded.
Vanessa read.
Her face collapsed.
“My father did this to me.”
Hannah cried.
Vanessa continued turning pages.
Then stopped.
“Elena.”
“What?”
“Your name.”
Elena froze.
A file:
ELENA BROOKS - AGE 17.
Dominic crossed the room.
“What?”
Elena took the page.
She had been treated too.
After witnessing Alexander's death.
Frank had said he “made sure” she wouldn't remember.
Now she understood.
Frank had taken her to Harold's clinic.
Project Winter.
Her father had allowed it.
She felt sick.
“Dad knew.”
Dominic's expression darkened.
“He was terrified.”
“That doesn't make it right.”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at Elena.
“For what it's worth…”
Elena waited.
“I understand why you don't forgive me.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“But I remember something now.”
“What?”
“The night Alexander died.”
Dominic moved closer.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Camille didn't order Kane to shoot him.”
Dominic frowned.
“What?”
“She begged him not to.”
Everyone froze.
Vanessa continued.
“My father told Kane to fire.”
Dominic's face hardened.
“Harold.”
“Yes.”
“Why would Camille take the blame?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Because Harold threatened you.”
Dominic stopped breathing.
“Me?”
“You were nearby.”
He had always believed he was in Denver that night.
But memory shifted.
A business dinner.
A sudden call.
His father asking him to stay away from Aspen.
Vanessa continued.
“Harold said if Camille told the truth, you would die next.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
His mother had betrayed his father in many ways.
But perhaps she had also spent the rest of her life protecting her son from the consequences.
Elena looked at Dominic.
He had spent his life believing everyone around him was either loyal or disloyal.
Good or bad.
Friend or enemy.
Now the truth was messier.
Vanessa handed him another file.
“There’s more.”
Harold Crane had not created Project Winter.
Someone had funded it.
A private foundation.
VALE FAMILY HEALTH TRUST.
Dominic stared.
Authorized signature:
ALEXANDER VALE.
His father.
Elena whispered:
“Your father funded this?”
Dominic shook his head.
“Maybe before he knew what it became.”
Vanessa opened the earliest documents.
Project Winter began as a trauma-treatment program for families affected by organized crime.
Legal therapy.
Counseling.
Emergency relocation.
Then Harold converted it into something darker.
Dominic closed the file.
“My father built the tool.”
“Harold weaponized it,” Elena said.
Dominic nodded.
Another truth without a simple villain.
Then Marco called.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“Kane's talking.”
Elias had survived surgery.
Federal investigators were questioning him.
“He says Harold wasn't acting alone.”
Dominic frowned.
“Who?”
“Someone financed Crane after Alexander died.”
“Name.”
Marco hesitated.
“Mrs. Garrison.”
Elena stared.
“The head housekeeper?”
“Yes.”
“Impossible.”
Marco continued.
“Her real name isn't Margaret Garrison.”
Dominic's expression sharpened.
“What is it?”
“Margaret Kane.”
Elias Kane's mother.
The woman Alexander Vale abandoned.
May you like
The woman who had spent three months supervising Elena inside Dominic's house.
And the woman who had watched silently while Vanessa sent Elena into the storm.
