Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE THAT DIDN'T EXIST

The original house stood outside town.
At least, the records said it had been demolished.
But Samuel remembered the property.
He drove there before sunrise.
The land looked empty.
Tall grass.
Broken fencing.
A rusted mailbox.
Nothing else.
Daniel checked the coordinates.
“This is it.”
Emma looked around.
“There isn't a house.”
Samuel stepped toward the mailbox.
He noticed a small metal plate attached beneath it.
A number.
17.
He remembered something his adoptive father had told him as a child.
When you can't find the door, look for the number.
Samuel removed the plate.
Behind it was a key.
They walked toward the field.
Samuel found an old stone.
Number 17.
He inserted the key into a narrow slot.
The ground moved.
A hidden staircase appeared.
Emma stared.
“What is this?”
Samuel answered:
“The original house.”
They descended.
The underground structure was enormous.
Rooms.
Documents.
Computers.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Everything Project Harbor had collected over decades.
Daniel whispered:
“This is the archive.”
Samuel found a wall covered with names.
Victims.
Families.
Children.
Dates.
At the bottom was Emma's name.
Beside it:
FINAL HEIR.
Emma stepped backward.
“What does that mean?”
Samuel opened a nearby folder.
Inside was a medical record.
Emma's birth.
But the name of her biological mother had been removed.
Samuel looked at Laura.
“What's missing?”
Laura's face went pale.
“My blood type.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
Samuel understood.
“Because Emma isn't biologically yours.”
Laura began crying.
Emma froze.
“What?”
Samuel looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Laura whispered:
“They took a sample when you were born.”
“Why?”
“Because they needed to confirm something.”
Emma's voice shook.
“Confirm what?”
Laura reached for her.
“You're related to the founder.”
Silence.
Emma stepped away.
“What founder?”
“The man who created the original trust.”
Samuel looked at the records.
Emma wasn't simply an heir by legal arrangement.
She was a direct descendant.
That explained everything.
The trust had been protected by bloodline conditions.
Only Emma could access it.
That was why Project Harbor needed her declared incompetent.
They didn't need Samuel.
They needed her.
Samuel looked at the wall.
At the very bottom was one final name.
UNKNOWN HEIR.
Then a photograph.
A newborn baby.
Emma.
Beside her was a woman.
Samuel stared.
He recognized her.
It was the woman in the recording.
His mother.
But there was another person standing behind them.
A man.
Samuel zoomed in.
His heart stopped.
The man was his adoptive father.
Alive.
Young.
Standing beside the baby.
Samuel whispered:
“He knew.”
Daniel shook his head.
“About Emma?”
“Everything.”
Then they heard footsteps above.
Someone had followed them.
Samuel turned off the lights.
Everyone became silent.
Footsteps descended.
Slowly.
A flashlight appeared.
Then a voice.
“Samuel.”
Samuel recognized it.
The police chief.
But he wasn't alone.
Victoria stepped beside him.
And behind them stood the man from the photograph.
The man who looked exactly like Samuel.
Victoria smiled.
“You finally found the house.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“You lied about everything.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted us here.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victoria pointed toward Emma.
“Because she is the only one who can open the vault.”
Emma stared.
“What vault?”
Victoria smiled.
“The one beneath your feet.”
The floor suddenly opened.
Emma screamed.
Samuel grabbed her hand.
Daniel grabbed Samuel.
The three of them were pulled toward the darkness.
Then the entire room went black.
When Samuel opened his eyes, he was alone.
Emma was gone.
Daniel was gone.

And someone had left a message on the wall.
