Chapter 7 - THE REAL FAMILY

Samuel sat in silence for nearly an hour.
The truth was worse than betrayal.
He had been adopted.
His real father had been one of the founders of Project Harbor.
His real mother had disappeared before he was born.
And the man he called Dad had taken him away from that world.
But there was one thing Samuel couldn't understand.
“Why me?”
Laura answered.
“Because your father knew what they were capable of.”
“Then why did he keep me?”
“Because he loved you.”
Samuel looked at her.
“Even though I wasn't his biological son?”
“He loved you more because of it.”
Daniel sat beside him.
“So Grandpa knew?”
Laura nodded.
“He knew everything.”
Emma asked:
“Then why didn't anyone tell us?”
“Because every generation became another piece of the operation.”
Samuel finally understood.
His adoptive father had tried to break the cycle.
He had taken Samuel away.
Changed his name.
Raised him quietly.
And hoped the past would never return.
But Project Harbor never forgot.
They found him.
They watched him.
They waited.
Then Laura became their target.
Samuel looked at Victoria.
“You knew all of this.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Laura was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel was investigating.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Emma would inherit.”
“Yes.”
Samuel stood.
“Then why did you let me investigate?”
Victoria smiled.
“Because I wanted you to find the wrong person.”
Samuel frowned.
“What?”
She leaned forward.
“Everything you've discovered was designed to lead you here.”
Samuel's expression changed.
“The documents.”
“The photographs.”
“The recordings.”
“All of it.”
Daniel stood.
“That's impossible.”
Victoria smiled.
“You think you exposed Project Harbor.”
She shook her head.
“You exposed the decoy.”
Samuel's blood ran cold.
“What decoy?”
Victoria looked toward the window.
“Look outside.”
Samuel did.
Several black SUVs had arrived.
Federal agents.
Police.
News crews.
Victoria smiled.
“Exactly what I wanted.”
Samuel stared.
“You wanted to be caught?”
“I wanted everyone to believe Project Harbor had been dismantled.”
Daniel whispered:
“There are others.”
Victoria nodded.
“Much more powerful ones.”
Samuel turned.
“Where?”
Victoria smiled.
“You'll never find them.”
Then she stepped backward.
A sharp crack sounded.
The lights went out.
When they returned, Victoria was gone.
The police chief stared.
“How?”
Samuel looked at the floor.
A hidden passage stood open beneath the rug.
“She planned an escape.”
Daniel rushed toward it.
Samuel stopped him.
“No.”
“Dad!”
“It's another trap.”
Daniel froze.
Samuel pointed toward the passage.
A small red light blinked.
“Explosive.”
Everyone backed away.
The police evacuated the building.
Seconds later, the basement exploded.
Smoke filled the house.
Samuel grabbed Emma.
Laura grabbed Daniel.
They ran outside.
The entire building shook.
Fire climbed through the windows.
Samuel watched the house burn.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message.
YOU FOUND THE WRONG FAMILY.
He stared.
Another message appeared.
YOUR DAUGHTER IS STILL THE KEY.
Samuel looked toward Emma.
She was standing beside Laura.
Safe.
For the moment.
But something about the message bothered him.
He turned to Daniel.
“Why would they call Emma the key?”
Daniel looked confused.
“I don't know.”
Samuel remembered the trust.
The inheritance.
The guardianship.
The forged documents.
Then he realized something.
Emma wasn't merely the beneficiary.
She was the only person who could access a specific account.
An account Samuel had never told anyone about.
A hidden account created before Emma was born.
Daniel's eyes widened.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“The account.”
Samuel nodded.
“Exactly.”
They rushed to a secure computer.
The account required two signatures.
Samuel entered his.
Denied.
Daniel entered his.
Denied.
Emma tried hers.
The system opened.
A message appeared:
WELCOME, EMMA.
Below it was another line.
YOU HAVE 72 HOURS.
Then a video began playing.
A woman appeared.
Samuel recognized her immediately.
His mother.
But she looked terrified.
She said:
“If Emma is watching this, I'm already dead.”
Samuel's blood ran cold.
She continued.
“The money is not the real inheritance.”
A pause.
“The real inheritance is the evidence.”
The screen went black.
Then one final sentence appeared:
FIND THE ORIGINAL HOUSE.
Samuel stared.
He knew exactly what that meant.
The house where Laura had supposedly died.
May you like
The house that had been demolished fifteen years ago.
Or so everyone believed.
