Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN BEHIND EVERYTHING

Audrey couldn't breathe.

Her mother.

Alive?

Impossible.

She had stood beside her mother's grave.

She had carried flowers there every year.

She had mourned her for more than two decades.

“This isn't funny.”

“No one is joking,” Dominic's father said.

Audrey backed away.

“Where is she?”

Before he could answer, the church doors opened.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Leaning on a cane.

Audrey knew the face immediately.

She had dreamed about it for years.

“Mom?”

The woman began crying.

Audrey didn't move.

Her mother crossed the room slowly.

“I am sorry.”

Audrey's voice cracked.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I thought it was the only way to protect you.”

“Everyone says that.”

Her mother stopped.

“I know.”

Audrey's anger erupted.

“You all made decisions for me. You lied to me. You watched me build a life with a man whose family was using me.”

Her mother lowered her head.

“You're right.”

“Why?”

“Because your father and Dominic's father discovered that the people stealing from the company were connected to organized financial crime.”

Audrey stared.

“They threatened us.”

“Who?”

Her mother looked at Dominic.

“Your husband's grandfather.”

Dominic's face went pale.

“My grandfather?”

“He created the original criminal network.”

The truth was worse than Audrey had imagined.

The family empire had not been built entirely through legitimate business.

For decades, money had been moved through construction contracts, shell companies, false invoices, and manipulated real estate deals.

Dominic's father had eventually tried to escape.

Audrey's father helped him.

The two families created the trust to protect the children from the criminal network.

But Victoria discovered part of the plan.

She wanted the money.

And she became vulnerable to manipulation.

Paige had been recruited by a financial intermediary.

Richard had been forced to cooperate.

Even Dominic had unknowingly become part of the system.

But Audrey's mother revealed the final secret.

“Your pregnancy changed everything.”

Audrey stared.

“What do you mean?”

“The trust had a final activation clause.”

“What clause?”

“If you had a child, the child became the permanent beneficiary.”

Audrey's heart broke.

“My baby?”

“Yes.”

“And someone wanted the baby gone.”

Her mother nodded.

“Victoria discovered the clause.”

Audrey's hands began trembling.

“So the fall…”

“Was not an accident.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Who pushed her?”

Everyone turned toward him.

His mother stood in the doorway.

Victoria.

She was holding a small purse.

Her face was exhausted.

“I did.”

Silence.

Audrey stared at her.

Victoria began crying.

“I didn't know she was pregnant.”

“But you pushed me.”

“I wanted you to leave.”

“You could have killed me.”

“I know.”

Dominic looked devastated.

“Mom…”

Victoria looked at him.

“I thought if Audrey disappeared, the company would come back to us.”

Audrey's voice was quiet.

“You destroyed your own son.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Dominic.

“You destroyed yourself long before I pushed her.”

Dominic had no answer.

Then police entered.

Victoria raised her hands.

But before officers could reach her, she said:

“There is one more person you haven't found.”

Audrey's blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Victoria looked toward the church's back door.

May you like

“Your grandfather.”

Then the lights went out.
