Chapter 3 - THE SECRET TRUST

Audrey woke before sunrise.
She was staying in a small coastal hotel two hours outside San Diego.
No luxury suite.
No private driver.
No expensive luggage.
Just a quiet room, a suitcase, and her mother's old necklace lying beside the bed.
She touched it gently.
For years, she had believed patience could save a marriage.
She had believed Dominic would eventually choose her.
Instead, she had discovered something far more painful.
He had never been the only person deceiving her.
His mother had been hiding financial records.
His father's estate had been altered.
And the company Audrey secretly controlled had been used as a vehicle for something she still couldn't fully understand.
Sophia called at 6:12 a.m.
“We found Richard Vale.”
Audrey sat up.
“Where?”
“Arizona.”
“I know.”
Sophia paused.
“You already knew?”
“I suspected.”
“How?”
Audrey reached for the notebook beside her bed.
“My father kept a handwritten ledger.”
She opened it.
Every page contained dates, amounts, initials, and brief notes.
One entry was circled.
R.V. — TRUST TRANSFER — DO NOT TRUST VICTORIA.
Audrey had found the ledger six months after her father's death.
At first, she assumed it concerned a business dispute.
Then she discovered something that changed everything.
Her father had been appointed trustee of a confidential family trust connected to Dominic's father.
The trust had been created after the two men built their first construction company together.
When Dominic's father died, Victoria had claimed the entire business belonged to her family.
But legally, it didn't.
A portion belonged to a protected trust.
And Audrey's father had been responsible for safeguarding it.
Then he died suddenly.
The official cause had been a heart attack.
Audrey had never questioned it.
Until now.
Sophia asked, “Do you know what the trust contains?”
“Not everything.”
“But you control sixty-two percent of the company.”
“That's why I married Dominic without telling him.”
Sophia went silent.
Audrey closed her eyes.
“I needed to know whether he loved me without knowing what I owned.”
“And?”
“He didn't.”
There was no bitterness in her voice.
Only exhaustion.
Sophia said softly, “There is something else.”
“What?”
“Your father's death may have been connected to the trust.”
Audrey's hand tightened around the necklace.
“Explain.”
“Richard Vale handled the paperwork.”
“And Victoria?”
“Was listed as a secondary beneficiary.”
Audrey stared at the wall.
“She's been trying to access the trust for years.”
“Yes.”
“And Dominic?”
“Was never supposed to know.”
That sentence made Audrey uneasy.
“Why?”
Sophia hesitated.
“Because the trust contains a clause.”
“What clause?”
“If Dominic ever became involved in financial fraud against the company, his inheritance rights would disappear.”
Audrey slowly understood.
The company wasn't just a business.
It was a test.
And Dominic had failed it.
But then Sophia said the words Audrey had been dreading.
“There's another beneficiary.”
“Who?”
“Your child.”
Audrey's breathing stopped.
Her unborn baby.
The child she had lost.
Sophia continued carefully.
“The trust was amended six months ago.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Audrey stared at the ledger.
Her father had been dead for years.
“That isn't possible.”
“It is if he knew he was in danger.”
Audrey's phone buzzed.
A photograph arrived.
It showed her father standing beside Richard Vale.
The date on the photograph was six months after his supposed death.
Audrey dropped the phone.
May you like
Her father had been alive.
And someone had spent years making sure she believed he wasn't.
