Chapter 8 - THE LAST SECRET OF THE TRUST

Back at the house, Nathan locked every door.

The family gathered in the study.

Nobody trusted anybody anymore.

Nathan connected the flash drive to his laptop.

A folder appeared.

FINAL INSTRUCTIONS — OPEN ONLY AFTER NORA KNOWS ABOUT EVELYN.

My hands shook.

The recording began.

My grandmother appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

“Nora,” she said.

“If you're watching this, then someone has tried to take the house.”

I swallowed hard.

“I wish I could have told you everything.”

She explained the final secret.

My grandfather had not built the company alone.

His first investor had been Eleanor.

She had created the original trust.

But the family later stole control.

My grandmother fought them for decades.

Then came the shocking revelation.

The house wasn't merely collateral.

It was the legal headquarters of the original trust.

Whoever controlled the house legally controlled voting rights over the family company.

That meant my mother wasn't trying to steal a home.

She was trying to seize control of a fortune.

And she wasn't alone.

My grandmother continued.

“Diane believes she is acting for herself.”

My mother covered her face.

“She is not.”

The recording showed another document.

A list of names.

At the top:

Victor Hale.

Then:

Colin Carter.

I turned toward Colin.

He wasn't there.

Nathan's face hardened.

“Where is he?”

Nobody knew.

Then another name appeared.

Marissa Carter.

My sister.

She began crying.

“I didn't know.”

“You signed the papers,” Nathan said.

“Mom told me they were harmless.”

My mother screamed:

“Stop blaming me!”

The recording continued.

“Victor will attempt to regain control through Diane's children.”

My heart pounded.

Then my grandmother said the words none of us expected.

“But there is one person Victor fears.”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Evelyn.

My sister stared at it.

“Me?”

My grandmother nodded through the recording.

“Evelyn possesses the original evidence.”

Evelyn whispered:

“I don't have anything.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Think carefully.”

She suddenly touched the necklace around her neck.

“This?”

She removed it.

Inside the pendant was a tiny memory card.

My grandmother's final evidence.

The financial records.

The original death investigation.

And proof that Victor had spent decades manipulating our family.

Then the front door slammed.

A voice came from the hallway.

“Beautiful family reunion.”

We froze.

Victor Hale walked into the study.

Older.

Calm.

Alive.

He smiled at me.

“Your grandmother underestimated how much I knew.”

He raised a gun.

May you like

“And now she has no way to protect you.”
