Chapter 5 - THE LEDGER

Police arrived twenty minutes later.
The basement was empty.
Colin was found outside, shaken but alive.
He claimed someone had grabbed him from behind and dragged him through the kitchen.
But something about his story didn't make sense.
Nathan noticed it too.
“You weren't attacked,” he said.
Colin glared at him.
“What are you accusing me of?”
“Nothing yet.”
That “yet” hung in the air.
The police searched the property.
No Victor.
No hidden intruder.
No broken windows.
Nothing.
It should have made me feel safer.
It didn't.
Because someone had entered the house without leaving a trace.
After midnight, Nathan finally opened the first folder from the safe.
Inside was the ledger.
Pages of handwritten transactions.
Companies.
Bank accounts.
Transfers.
Names.
Then I saw one name repeated again and again.
Diane Carter.
My mother.
Amounts ranged from $25,000 to nearly $400,000.
I looked at her.
She started crying.
“I didn't keep it.”
“Where did it go?”
She shook her head.
“Your uncle made me sign.”
“Which uncle?”
She hesitated.
“Daniel.”
I remembered Daniel.
My grandmother's younger brother.
He had supposedly moved to Europe decades ago.
Nathan flipped another page.
“There are payments to Daniel.”
Then another.
“To Victor Hale.”
My stomach turned.
“How many people were involved?”
“More than we thought.”
Then I noticed something.
A column marked:
NORA — PROTECTED
“What does that mean?”
Nathan studied the page.
“I don't know.”
Raymond stepped closer.
“I do.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Your grandmother knew they were using the family trust to hide illegal transfers. She couldn't expose them without putting Nora at risk.”
“Why me?”
Raymond stared at the ledger.
“Because you were the only heir they couldn't control.”
My mother whispered, “That's why I tried to make you dependent.”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
“If you depended on me, I could keep you away from the trust.”
“You tried to control my life because of money?”
“I was trying to protect you!”
“You let Marissa move into my home!”
“I made mistakes!”
I shook my head.
“You made choices.”
Silence.
Then Nathan opened the final page.
There was a signature.
Not my mother's.
Not Daniel's.
Not Victor's.
My grandmother's.
Beneath it was a sentence:
THE ORIGINAL HEIR IS NOT NORA.
My heart stopped.
Nathan looked at me.
“I was afraid of this.”
“What does that mean?”
He turned the page.
A birth certificate copy was attached.
The mother's name was my grandmother's daughter.
The child's name was not mine.
I stared.
Then I realized.
There had been another baby.
Another heir.
Someone my family had erased.
My mother began trembling.
I looked at her.
“Mom…”
She whispered one name.
“Evelyn.”
My mother's firstborn daughter.
May you like
A sister I had never known existed.
