Chapter 11 - THE SECRET ADRIEN CARRIED FOR EIGHT YEARS

Adrien admitted the truth when I confronted him.

We met at Vivian's office again.

This time, I brought the photograph.

I placed it between us.

"Explain."

He stared at the image.

His face drained.

"Elena..."

I folded my arms.

"Did you know Thomas?"

Adrien nodded slowly.

"Yes."

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

"You knew my brother?"

"Before we met."

"And you never told me?"

He looked down.

"No."

My anger rose.

"Why?"

Adrien took a shaky breath.

"Because I believed he was involved in a financial fraud scheme."

I stared.

"What?"

"Harrison introduced him as a consultant."

I felt sick.

Adrien continued.

"Thomas came to several meetings. He asked questions about the trust investments."

"Because he was investigating Harrison."

Adrien looked up.

"I know that now."

I leaned forward.

"Did you know he disappeared?"

"Yes."

"And you knew he was my brother?"

Adrien hesitated.

"Not until after we were engaged."

My chest tightened.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

He closed his eyes.

"Victoria said discussing him would destroy our relationship."

I laughed bitterly.

"And you believed her."

"Yes."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the question I'd been avoiding.

"Did you help Harrison hide Thomas?"

Adrien's expression changed.

"No."

"Did you know he was alive?"

"No."

I studied him.

For the first time, his answer seemed completely sincere.

He looked devastated.

Not because his empire was crumbling.

Because he was finally seeing what his silence had cost.

"Adrien," I said quietly, "you weren't simply careless."

He nodded.

"I know."

"You allowed Victoria to control what I knew about my own family."

His eyes filled.

"Yes."

I stood.

"That's something I don't know how to forgive."

Adrien looked down.

"I understand."

As I reached the door, he spoke.

"Elena?"

I stopped.

"Yes?"

"I've been meeting with independent counsel."

I turned.

"About what?"

"The companies."

He took a breath.

"I'm separating myself from the criminal operations."

I stared.

For six years, Adrien had told me such a thing was impossible.

The family empire was too complicated.

The alliances too dangerous.

The money too deeply connected.

Now he was telling me he intended to change.

"Why?"

His voice broke.

"Because I don't want to be the man who destroyed everything good in his life."

I looked at him.

For a moment, part of me wanted to believe him.

But love couldn't be rebuilt from promises alone.

"Then do the work," I whispered.

"And don't do it for me."

Adrien nodded.

"I won't."

Three days later, investigators arrested Harrison Hail on charges connected to financial fraud and conspiracy.

Victoria and Daniel were also taken into custody.

The stolen corporate documents were recovered.

And Thomas agreed to provide testimony.

For the first time, the conspiracy began to unravel.

Then Vivian called with one final discovery.

"Elena, the forensic accountants found something in your grandfather's trust."

I frowned.

"What?"

"An asset nobody knew existed."

My stomach tightened.

"How valuable?"

Vivian took a breath.

"Potentially more than three hundred million dollars."

I stared.

Then she added something even stranger.

"The asset wasn't intended for you."

May you like

I felt cold.

"It was intended for Thomas."
