Chapter 1 - THE SIGNATURE THAT HELD HIS EMPIRE

The banker spoke seven words that made Adrien Moretti forget how to breathe.
"Your wife has withdrawn her authorization."
Adrien stood behind his enormous mahogany desk, staring at the Chicago skyline.
"What authorization?"
On the other end of the telephone, Jonathan Pierce, senior vice president of Halstead Private Banking, hesitated.
"The Moretti Maritime credit facility."
Adrien frowned.
"Elena doesn't control that account."
A long silence followed.
Then Jonathan replied carefully.
"Mr. Moretti, with respect, Mrs. Moretti is the designated managing representative of the Carter Family Investment Trust."
Adrien went still.
"The what?"
"The trust that holds thirty-five percent of Moretti Maritime Holdings."
Adrien gripped the telephone.
"That's impossible."
"I'm looking at the original documents, sir."
For six years, Adrien had believed his shipping empire belonged entirely to him.
He was the man who negotiated contracts.
The man who commanded warehouse managers.
The man whose signature appeared on newspaper photographs beside visiting executives.
But the financial structure beneath those companies had been designed by Elena.
And Adrien had never bothered to understand it.
Jonathan continued.
"Your wife's trust provided the original collateral supporting the shipping expansion."
Adrien felt his stomach tighten.
"How much?"
"Approximately eighty-six million dollars in pledged assets."
The room seemed to tilt.
Eighty-six million.
Adrien sat slowly.
"Why would she withdraw it?"
"She hasn't withdrawn the assets. She has notified us that she will no longer provide discretionary approvals on the company's behalf."
Adrien closed his eyes.
There was a difference.
A very expensive difference.
Without Elena's authorization, the bank couldn't process certain changes to the credit facility.
The existing agreements remained in place.
But several pending transactions needed additional approvals.
Including the major shipping deal Adrien had announced before two hundred guests.
"What happens now?" he asked.
Jonathan's voice remained professional.
"The pending facility amendment cannot close until the required authorized parties approve it."
Adrien ended the call without answering.
For several minutes, he sat motionless.
Then he pressed the intercom.
"Marco."
His security chief appeared almost immediately.
"Boss?"
"Find Elena."
Marco hesitated.
"Sir, she hasn't answered our calls."
"Then find out where she's staying."
"Mr. Moretti..."
Adrien looked up sharply.
"What?"
Marco took a breath.
"Mrs. Moretti left instructions with her attorney. She doesn't want anyone tracking her movements."
Adrien's jaw tightened.
"She's my wife."
Marco held his gaze.
"She's also an adult who has asked to be left alone."
The words landed like an insult.
Or perhaps like a truth Adrien had spent six years refusing to hear.
He looked away.
"Get my lawyer."
Twenty minutes later, attorney Rebecca Shaw arrived carrying a thick folder.
She looked concerned.
"Adrien, we need to discuss the ownership structure."
He leaned forward.
"Explain."
Rebecca opened the file.
"Before your marriage, Elena Carter inherited a substantial investment portfolio from her grandfather."
Adrien nodded impatiently.
"I know."
"She placed part of it into an independently administered trust."
"So?"
"That trust financed your first two shipping acquisitions."
Adrien stared.
Rebecca continued.
"Elena also negotiated several long-term contracts personally."
He felt his pulse quicken.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning her departure doesn't cancel the contracts, but it leaves important operational responsibilities unassigned."
Adrien looked toward the closing file.
The missing original agreements.
The pending bank approval.
The shipping partnership he'd celebrated before humiliating his wife.
He suddenly remembered something Elena had said three weeks earlier.
Adrien, you need to attend the finance committee meeting.
He'd waved her away.
Handle it, sweetheart. That's what you're good at.
Rebecca turned another page.
Then her expression changed.
"There's something else."
Adrien looked up.
"What?"
"Victoria Hail has submitted a request to become an authorized representative of Moretti Maritime."
Adrien frowned.
"She mentioned helping with the transition."
Rebecca shook her head.
"That's not the problem."
She turned the document toward him.
The request included Elena's signature.
Dated three days earlier.
Adrien stared.
Then whispered, "Elena had already left."
May you like
Rebecca nodded.
"And the signature appears to be forged."
