CHAPTER 6 - Shadows over Rowan Coastal
The rain fell in relentless sheets over Charleston, drumming against the reinforced glass windows of Naomi’s private office on Broad Street. Outside, the gas lamps of the historic district flickered against the dark, slick cobblestones.
Inside, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Spread across a large conference table were the contents of the hidden vault: medical records, financial wire transfers, and the forensic toxicology reports retrieved from the metal film canister.
Dr. Aris Vance—a forensic pathologist hired by Naomi from out of state—placed his glasses on the table and looked at Claire.
"The official cause of your father’s death fifteen years ago was listed as traumatic blunt-force impact resulting from a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 17," Dr. Aris explained, pointing to a series of high-contrast black-and-white X-rays. "However, the original tissue samples preserved in this canister tell a drastically different story."
Claire sat rigid in her leather chair, her fingers locked around a warm cup of tea she hadn't touched. "He didn't die from the crash?"
"He was dead before the car ever left the road," Dr. Aris stated flatly. "His lungs contained lethal concentrations of Thallium sulphate—a tasteless, odorless heavy metal poison that causes gradual neurological failure, severe disorientation, and eventual cardiac arrest over a period of weeks."
"Poisoned," Elise whispered, holding Claire’s cold hand.
"And look at the prescription logs attached to the file," Naomi added, sliding a yellowed pharmacy receipt toward Claire. "The Thallium was ordered through a chemical distribution firm in Savannah owned by a holding company called V-Maritime. The primary signatory authorizing the delivery to your father’s private residence was Miriam Vance."
"She poisoned him," Claire said, her voice eerily calm, devoid of tears, replaced by an ancient, lethal anger. "She poisoned the man who took me in, raised me, and gave me his name. She killed him to take his company, and when his will left everything to me in a locked trust, she brought Garrick into my life to steal it back piece by piece."
Before Naomi could respond, the conference room phone rang with a sharp, piercing chime.
Naomi hit the speaker button. "Speak."
"Naomi, it’s Marcus at the land registry," her clerk’s panicked voice came through the speaker. "We have a major emergency. A legal entity called The Victor Vance Estate Corporation, registered in Panama, just filed an emergency motion in federal district court to freeze all assets belonging to Rowan Coastal Group."
Naomi jumped to her feet. "On what grounds?!"
"They produced an original 1992 partnership charter between Rowan Vance and Victor Vance," the clerk reported, paper rustling over the line. "The charter contains an automatic reversion clause stating that if Rowan Vance died without a biological heir, 100% of the company’s real estate assets, equity options, and coastal land holdings revert immediately to Victor Vance or his surviving legal lineage."
Claire stood up, her dark eyes flashing with cold, mathematical precision. "And since they have the hospital record proving I am not Rowan’s biological daughter, they are attempting to strip Rowan Coastal Group of every acre of land."
"It gets worse, Miss Claire," the clerk continued, his voice trembling. "The motion was personally signed by Victor Vance’s legal representative. Victor Vance isn't dead. He filed an affidavit from an address right here in Charleston."
The room plunged into absolute silence.
The ghost had walked out of the shadows. Victor Vance was alive, sitting in Charleston, preparing to execute the final stroke of a thirty-year game of theft, murder, and psychological warfare.
Claire walked to the window, looking out at the rain-soaked streets of the city. She saw her reflection in the dark glass—not the terrified, weeping girl who had been slapped in the foyer four years ago, but a woman forged in the fire of her enemies' greed.
"Naomi," Claire said softly, turning around.
"Yes, Claire?"
"Call the federal prosecutor who handled Garrick’s trial. Tell him we are filing a reopening motion for the murder of Rowan Vance."
May you like
Claire looked at Elise, her posture regal and unyielding.
"And tell Victor Vance that if he wants my father’s empire, he’ll have to come to Rowan House and take it from my hands."
