CHAPTER 11 - The Fires of Vengeance
Two weeks after the trial, a fierce autumn storm rolled over the South Carolina coastline. Gale-force winds whipped the ocean into towering white waves, hammering against the wooden piers and bending the live oaks along the peninsula.
At Rowan House, the main building was quiet. Most of the residents had been evacuated to a inland shelter as a precaution against coastal flooding, leaving only Claire, Elise, and Thomas on the property to secure the historic stained-glass windows and lock down the lower foundations.
Inside the grand library—where the oversized Vance portrait had once hung—Claire stood before a roaring fireplace, holding her father's old reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Elise walked into the room, holding two mugs of hot tea. "Thomas just finished securing the west wing shutters, Claire. The eye of the storm will pass over us in twenty minutes."
"Thank you, sweetie," Claire smiled, taking the mug.
She pressed play on the vintage tape recorder.
The scratchy, warm voice of Rowan Vance filled the quiet library, blending with the sound of the wind howling outside.
"Claire, my sweet girl... if you are listening to this tape, it means I am no longer with you. I know the truth about where you came from will hurt. I know Miriam and Victor will try to use your blood against you. But I need you to remember something, my darling..."
The tape crackled softly before Rowan’s voice returned, filled with immense, emotional warmth.
"Blood is just water that carries oxygen. Family is the home you build with your own hands. You are my daughter in every way that matters. Never let anyone make you feel small in a house I built for you."
Tears glistened in Claire’s eyes as she smiled, holding the tape recorder close to her heart.
Suddenly, a loud CRASH echoed from the marble foyer downstairs, followed by the sound of shattering glass and a harsh, shouting voice.
Elise dropped her mug, the porcelain shattering against the hearth. "What was that?!"
Thomas’s voice echoed frantically from the hallway below: "Miss Claire! Get upstairs! Now!"
A gunshot rang through the house—a sharp, deafening BANG that cut through the sound of the storm.
Claire and Elise rushed out of the library to the second-floor balcony railing, looking down into the dim marble foyer below.
Standing in the center of the foyer, soaking wet, holding a smoking revolver, was Arthur Pendelton—Victor Vance’s disgraced lead attorney. Beside him stood two armed men wearing dark rain slickers, carrying cans of industrial gasoline.
On the floor near the entrance lay Thomas, clutching his shoulder where a bullet had grazed his arm.
"Claire Rowan!" Pendelton screamed, his face contorted with unhinged, frantic madness. His career was over, his assets frozen by federal authorities, his life ruined by his association with Victor Vance. "Come down here, you little bitch!"
"Pendelton!" Claire shouted from the balcony, stepping in front of Elise to shield her. "Put the gun down! The police are already on their way!"
"The police won't get here through the storm in time!" Pendelton shrieked, splashing gasoline across the marble floor and up the grand wooden staircase. "Victor gave me five million dollars in a private offshore account if I destroyed this house and everything inside it! If Victor goes down, the Rowan legacy dies tonight!"
One of the men flicked an open Zippo lighter, dropping it onto the gasoline-soaked rug.

WHOOSH!
A wall of orange fire erupted instantly across the foyer, blocking the main staircase, sending thick, black smoke rolling up toward the ceiling.
