Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Execution

Six months later, the criminal trial of State of Illinois v. Mauro Vance, Patricia Vance, and Jamie Vance reached its devastating conclusion at the Cook County Superior Courthouse.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. National media outlets, legal scholars, and public spectators filled every wooden pew in the gallery.

At the defense table sat Mauro and Patricia.

They looked completely unrecognizable. Dressed in dark green federal detention jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound by heavy steel chains, they sat four feet apart, refusing to look at each other, their toxic alliance completely destroyed by months of mutual betrayal in custody.

I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Veronica Saldana and Marcus Vance. I wore an immaculate ivory silk suit, my posture erect, my eyes clear, serene, and unbothered.

Judge Katherine Mercer slammed her heavy wooden gavel down, restoring absolute silence to the gallery.

“We are gathered today for sentencing,” Judge Mercer declared sternly, reviewing the probation reports before her. “Over the course of this trial, this court has witnessed an appalling display of calculated human wickedness, sociopathic greed, chemical poisoning, and an absolute disregard for human life.”

She fixed her razor-sharp gaze onto Mauro Vance first.

“Mauro Vance,” Judge Mercer thundered, her voice echoing authoritatively off the high marble walls. “You took the sacred vows of marriage and weaponized them to execute a slow, calculated biological execution against your wife for financial profit. You are a disgrace to humanity.”

Mauro slumped forward, weeping silently, his body shaking uncontrollably.

“On the counts of Attempted Premeditated Murder, RICO Wire Fraud, Identity Theft, and Grand Larcenary,” Judge Mercer declared, “I sentence you to thirty-two years in state prison, without the possibility of parole.”

Patricia let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, collapsing forward against the table as court marshals held her shoulders down.

“Patricia Vance,” the judge continued, turning her cold gaze onto the mother. “For your leadership role in RICO Financial Conspiracy, Fraud, and Accessory to Attempted Murder, you are sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison.”

“Jamie Vance,” Judge Mercer concluded. “For receiving stolen property and corporate fraud, you are sentenced to eight years in state custody.”

The heavy wooden gavel struck the block with a thunderous CRACK.

Court marshals immediately grabbed the heavy chains attached to all three prisoners, marching them out through the side doors toward the holding cells.

As Mauro was dragged away, he turned his head toward our row one last time, looking at me through a blur of desperate tears, his lips moving silently to form the words: Rebecca, please...

I sat tall in my chair. I didn't turn away. I met his eyes with a calm, absolute, and serene silence, watching the heavy steel door close behind him forever.
