Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Greed

I pressed the intercom button on my desk. My voice echoed crisp and clear through the external porch speakers.

“You are trespassing on private property, Patricia,” I said smoothly. “I suggest you step off my porch before my security team has you removed for criminal intrusion.”

Mauro stepped in front of the camera lens, his tie loosened, his eyes bloodshot with desperate rage. “Rebecca! Open this door right now! This is my house! I am your husband! You can't lock me out of my own home!”

“Check the land registry, Mauro,” I replied. “This house belongs 100% to the Rebecca Sterling Heritage Trust. You have zero legal equity, zero ownership, and as of five minutes ago, zero permission to set foot on the grounds.”

“You crazy bitch!” Patricia shrieked, her face contorting in demonic anger. “We made you! You were nobody before you married into the Vance name!”

“The Vance name carries two million dollars in unpaid debt, Patricia,” Veronica’s authoritative voice cut through the speaker. “My name is Veronica Saldana, legal counsel for Mrs. Rebecca Sterling. I am informing you that a formal Motion for Exclusive Possession, an Emergency Restraining Order, and a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage have been filed with the Cook County Circuit Court.”

Two tall, broad-shouldered private security guards stepped out from the side entrance, their hands resting over their tactical vests.

“Step down the stairs, folks,” the lead guard instructed firmly. “Your personal belongings have been packed into four plastic storage bins and placed by the front gate. If you do not leave the driveway in two minutes, the police will be called for criminal trespass.”

Jamie burst into tears again, tugging on Mauro’s jacket. “Mauro! Do something! I don't have my makeup! My clothes are in there!”

Mauro stood frozen on the stone steps, staring at the camera lens with a terrifying, hollow realization dawning in his eyes. The illusion of his power, his family’s fake status, and his parasitic lifestyle was shattering in real time.

Defeated, cursing, and weeping, the four of them dragged their storage bins down the long driveway toward the main road as the heavy wrought-iron gates slid shut and locked behind them with an iron CLANG.

Inside my study, Veronica opened a secondary file—a thick, black binder stamped with the seal of a top forensic financial auditing firm.

“Now, Rebecca,” Veronica said, her tone turning deadly serious. “Let’s look at what Marcus Vance found inside Mauro’s corporate ledgers while he was busy planning his ski trip.”
