Chapter 5 - THE COMPANY I OWNED WITHOUT KNOWING IT

CBH Europe Holdings had been incorporated forty-eight hours after I landed in France.
That was no coincidence.
The filing used my passport details and a scanned signature.
A Paris law office had submitted it.
Priya contacted French counsel immediately.
By midnight, I had an attorney in Lyon and another in Paris.
Romantic trip.
I almost laughed.
The company had one stated purpose:
Acquire and manage cross-border commercial assets.
Initial capitalization:
€50,000.
Source:
Vale Ridge International.
Scott.
Again.
“What does he gain by putting a company in my name?” I asked.
Priya answered over video.
“Possibly a vehicle for moving money.”
“Through me.”
“Yes.”
“Why France?”
“Jurisdictional complexity. Or because he knew you’d physically be there.”
“Does my presence matter?”
“It could help create a false appearance that you established operations personally.”
My stomach turned.
They had not only allowed me to leave for Europe.
Maybe someone wanted me there.
“Did Scott know my itinerary?”
“My full itinerary went only to you and one friend.”
“Yes.”
“But Mark knew I was traveling.”
“And your credit-card activity can reveal location.”
I had used my personal card at the hotel.
Someone monitoring accounts could track me.
Then Elena found the first transaction.
€1.9 million had entered CBH Europe Holdings.
I stared.
“That isn’t mine.”
“No.”
“Where did it come from?”
“Cyprus.”
“Who sent it?”
“An entity called Meridian North Trading.”
“Who owns that?”
“We’re tracing.”
“What happens if money moves out?”
“You could appear involved in laundering.”
My throat tightened.
“So this is not just asset theft.”
“No.”
“It’s a frame.”
“Potentially.”
I stood and paced the hotel room.
Scott had known me before I knew him.
Paid Mark to approach me.
Tracked my father’s property.
Moved family money through Lorraine.
Forged guarantees.
Created fake marital agreements.
And now he was building a foreign company in my name.
Why?
Forty million dollars of land could explain greed.
Not this level of architecture.
“What am I missing?”
Priya went quiet.
“Claire.”
“No. Say it.”
“This may have started before Mark.”
I stopped.
“How far before?”
“Elena found Vale Ridge Consulting’s first background search on your father.”
My pulse shifted.
“When?”
“Seventeen years ago.”
I was twenty-two.
My father was alive.
“Why investigate Dad?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Mark had not even met me.
Scott had already been looking at my family.
“What about Lorraine?”
Priya sighed.
“She and Scott were connected before Mark went to college.”
My stomach dropped.
“How?”
“A business.”
“What business?”
“Whitaker-Vale Property Services.”
Lorraine’s maiden name was Whitaker.
She and Scott’s father had owned a small property-management company.
Twenty-four years ago.
“Scott’s father?”
“Richard Vale.”
I frowned.
Mark always described Scott as coming from money.
He never mentioned his father.
“What happened to Richard?”
“Died twenty years ago.”
“How?”
“Construction accident.”
I almost laughed.
Another accident.
Priya did not.
“Claire, Richard Vale was working on a Bennett Commercial property when he died.”
My father’s company.
I stopped moving.
“Where?”
“Sacramento.”
The same land.
Of course.
“What happened?”
“Partial warehouse collapse.”
“Was Dad sued?”
“Yes.”
“Outcome?”
“Settled.”
“How much?”
“Confidential.”
“Did Scott blame my father?”
“We need evidence.”
I knew the answer anyway.
Maybe Mark had never been the real target.
Maybe I had married into somebody else’s revenge.
Then someone knocked on my hotel door.
Three precise knocks.
I froze.
“Are you expecting someone?” Priya asked.
“No.”
“Do not open it.”
I checked the peephole.
A hotel employee stood outside.
Behind him, a woman in a dark suit.
I called reception.
They confirmed both.
The woman was from the French financial crimes unit.
My stomach sank.
I opened the door with Priya still on video.
The investigator introduced herself as Camille Laurent.
She spoke perfect English.
“Ms. Hollis?”
“Yes.”
“We need to ask about CBH Europe Holdings.”
“I know.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“That is unusual.”
“My attorney is already involved.”
“Good.”
I handed her Priya’s contact details.
Camille studied me.
“Did you authorize a transfer this afternoon?”
“No.”
“What transfer?”
Her expression sharpened.
“Eight hundred thousand euros.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“From CBH Europe Holdings to an account in Monaco.”
“I didn’t.”
“Then someone accessed the corporate account using your identity.”
I closed my eyes.
“Who received it?”
Camille hesitated.
“An individual.”
“Name?”
She looked directly at me.
“Lorraine Whitaker Hollis.”
My mother-in-law.
The woman supposedly stranded in Hawaii.
My phone rang.
Dana.
I answered.
“Claire.”
Her voice was panicked.
“What?”
“Mom is gone.”
I gripped the phone.
“Gone where?”
“She left the villa two hours ago.”
“With who?”
“No one knows.”
Then Camille’s phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“The Monaco account was accessed in person.”
My blood went cold.
“When?”
“Thirty minutes ago.”
Lorraine had not been stranded in Hawaii.
May you like
Someone using her identity was in Monaco.
Or Lorraine had never gone to Hawaii at all.
