Chapter 7 - THE MESSAGE HIDDEN IN A CHAMPIONSHIP BELT

I had kept my old championship belt locked inside a wooden chest for eight years.
Not because I was proud of it anymore.
But because I couldn't bring myself to throw it away.
The gold plates had tarnished.
The leather was cracked.
And beneath the largest plate was a small engraving.
THE QUIET STORM.
Samantha had given me that nickname.
She'd said I fought like a thunderstorm approaching over a calm lake.
Quiet.
Patient.
Then impossible to ignore.
That afternoon, I opened the chest for the first time in years.
Ryan stood beside me.
“You don't have to do this.”
“I know.”
I lifted the belt.
Memories rushed back.
Crowds screaming.
My coach shouting instructions.
Samantha laughing in the locker room.
Then I noticed something strange.
One of the screws beneath the center plate was loose.
I frowned.
“That wasn't like that before.”
Ryan leaned closer.
“Could it have happened in storage?”
“Maybe.”
I turned the belt over.
There was a faint scratch beside the screw.
A small symbol.
A triangle.
My stomach tightened.
Samantha used to draw triangles on her equipment.
It was her lucky symbol.
I borrowed a screwdriver.
Carefully, I loosened the plate.
Inside was a tiny memory card wrapped in clear tape.
Ryan stared.
“What is that?”
I could barely breathe.
“Samantha.”
She must have hidden it before she died.
Maybe during one of our final training sessions.
Maybe she'd known something terrible was happening.
We contacted Detective Mitchell.
The card was examined by forensic technicians.
Several files were recovered.
Training schedules.
Medical documents.
Internal emails.
And one video.
The timestamp was from three days before Samantha's death.
She sat inside a locker room.
Her face looked pale.
Her hands were trembling.
“If anyone finds this,” she began, “please listen carefully.”
I started crying.
Her voice.
After eight years.
Samantha continued.
“Marcus has been giving fighters something. He says it's a vitamin program. But I found out the medical team has been changing our test results.”
She swallowed.
“I tried to refuse. He threatened to cancel my contract.”
My chest tightened.
“I told Daniel. He said we needed proof.”
She looked toward the locker room door.
Then lowered her voice.
“Evelyn doesn't know. I haven't told her because I don't want her dragged into this.”
Tears streamed down my face.
Samantha had been protecting me.
Even while she was terrified.
Then she continued.
“There's something else.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Marcus isn't working alone.”
I held my breath.
She lifted a photograph.
It showed Marcus Vale standing beside a man wearing a dark suit.
Derek Walsh.
And another person.
A woman.
I leaned closer.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized her.
Not from the fighting world.
From family dinners.
From birthdays.
From every holiday since I'd married Ryan.
May you like
Diane Walsh.
My mother-in-law.
