Chapter 13 - THE MARRIAGE THEY TRIED TO CONTROL

My husband and I had met at a charity fundraiser three years earlier.
He'd been standing beside the dessert table, trying to fix a broken projector.
I'd offered to help.
We'd spent twenty minutes laughing over tangled cables.
Then he'd asked for my number.
It had felt accidental.
Natural.
Like something good finally happening after years of pain.
Now Detective Mitchell was telling us that Derek and Diane had helped arrange the event.
And possibly our meeting.
Ryan stared at the documents.
“I didn't know.”
I looked at him.
“I believe you.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I swear, Claire.”
“I know.”
But believing him didn't make the truth less disturbing.
Mitchell explained that Diane had sponsored the fundraiser through one of her investment companies.
She'd received information about my attendance.
And she'd encouraged Ryan to go.
I felt cold.
“Why?”
The detective opened another message.
If Evelyn marries Ryan, she'll become easier to monitor.
My stomach turned.
They hadn't wanted us happy.
They'd wanted me close enough to watch.
Ryan stood abruptly.
“My mother used me.”
He looked devastated.
“She used my marriage.”
I reached for him.
He stepped into my arms.
For a long moment, we held each other.
Then he whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
I shook my head.
“You didn't know.”
He pulled back.
“But I should have noticed how they treated you.”
I looked into his eyes.
“You defended me.”
“Not enough.”
I took a breath.
“Then we decide what happens next. Together.”
He nodded.
That afternoon, Ryan contacted his mother through his attorney.
He informed her that he would no longer maintain personal or financial ties while the investigation continued.
Diane reacted with fury.
She accused me of destroying the family.
She demanded that Ryan choose between his mother and his wife.
Ryan's answer was simple.
“I choose the truth.”
For the first time, Diane had no response.
Over the following weeks, investigators uncovered evidence connecting Marcus Vale, Derek Walsh, and several associates to fraudulent medical testing and concealment of evidence.
Diane's financial involvement became part of the criminal investigation.
And my father's notebook helped identify additional victims.
Fighters whose careers had ended mysteriously.
Athletes who'd been pressured into unauthorized treatments.
Families who'd never received answers.
But the biggest revelation came when Detective Mitchell found another recording.
It had been made the morning Samantha died.
In the video, she confronted Marcus Vale.
“You can't keep doing this,” she said.
Marcus laughed.
“Who's going to stop me?”
Samantha looked directly into the camera.
Then answered:
“Evelyn Carter.”
I covered my mouth.
May you like
Because even on her final morning, Samantha had believed in me.
And now I knew exactly what I needed to do.
