Chapter 5 - THE COMPANY RONAN SWORE HE NEVER OWNED

Ronan had never heard of Ward Strategic Consulting.
Mara believed him.
That was the problem.
Grant placed the incorporation documents on the table.
“Electronic signature matches Mr. Ellison’s standard corporate certificate.”
Ronan shook his head.
“I didn’t sign this.”
“Your credential did.”
“When?”
“Fourteen months ago.”
Ronan looked at Mara.
“During the Dallas conference.”
Mara remembered.
Ronan had spent four days in Dallas.
Kelsey went with him.
Evan attended too.
Grant continued.
“Someone created Ward Strategic using copies of your identification documents, your electronic signature certificate, and an address attached to one of your holding companies.”
Ronan’s voice tightened.
“Kelsey handled travel paperwork.”
“And executive files?” Mara asked.
He looked ashamed.
“I gave her access to my document vault.”
Mara stared.
“You gave your employee access to copies of your passport, signature certificate, holding-company records, and private account documents?”
“She was my chief operations liaison.”
“She was sleeping with you.”
“Not then.”
Mara gave him a look.
He corrected himself.
“Not physically.”
That almost made it worse.
Grant tapped the page.
“Kelsey and Evan built a shell company around Mr. Ellison’s identity. That gave their invoices the appearance of being executive related-party transactions that had already been disclosed.”
Mara understood.
Auditors would assume Ronan knew.
Ronan would assume finance knew.
Everyone relied on somebody else.
Exactly the environment Kelsey needed.
“What was the endgame?” Mara asked.
Grant opened another file.
“Ellison House owns a proprietary logistics platform called Atlas.”
Mara’s expression changed.
She built Atlas before she met Ronan.
It coordinated vendors, staffing, guest-flow models, emergency substitutions, transportation, and contract pricing.
Luxury hotels across the country licensed parts of it.
“Ward Strategic attempted to acquire an exclusive license last night.”
Grant nodded.
“If that signature had stood, they could have sublicensed Atlas to a buyer.”
“For how much?”
“Preliminary term sheet says eighty million.”
Ronan went pale.
Mara looked at him.
“You almost handed away the system that built this company.”
“I didn’t know.”
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You were too busy rescuing Kelsey.”
That sentence cut.
Ronan accepted it.
Then Grant opened the last document.
“Kelsey and Evan were negotiating with Halcyon Hospitality.”
Mara knew the company.
Their biggest competitor.
Grant continued.
“Halcyon planned to buy Atlas, then use the scandal around Mr. Ellison and Ms. Ward to destabilize the board.”
Ronan frowned.
“What scandal?”
Grant slid across a drafted anonymous complaint.
CEO MISUSES COMPANY FUNDS TO FINANCE AFFAIR WITH SUBORDINATE.
Attached were hotel receipts.
Promotion records.
Car services.
The diamond bracelet Ronan had bought Kelsey.
Mara had never known about that.
She looked at him.
He looked away.
Grant continued.
“Once public, the board would likely suspend Mr. Ellison.”
“They wanted Ronan gone,” Mara said.
“And you weakened.”
“Why me?”
“Because they believed you had no operational interest in the company.”
Mara almost smiled.
There it was.
The same mistake Ronan had made.
The quiet wife.
The woman who handled charitable dinners and stayed away from press interviews.
They thought she was decorative.
Grant’s mouth shifted slightly.
“They didn’t know about your founder shares.”
“No.”
“Which means they built their entire takeover around the assumption that Ronan controlled your votes.”
Mara leaned back.
For the first time since 2:43 A.M., something inside her felt almost calm.
Kelsey had not merely underestimated her.
She had designed a multimillion-dollar theft around Mara being powerless.
Then Grant’s phone buzzed.
He read the message.
His expression changed.
“What?”
“The pregnancy.”
Ronan stiffened.
Grant looked at him.
“Kelsey isn’t pregnant.”
Ronan exhaled.
But Grant wasn’t finished.
“She purchased a positive pregnancy test online eleven days ago.”
Mara stared.
“Why?”
Grant placed another recovered message on the screen.
Kelsey had sent it to Evan.
IF HE THINKS THERE’S A BABY, HE’LL NEVER SIDE WITH MARA AGAIN.
May you like
The affair had never been Kelsey’s destination.
Ronan had been another asset she intended to control.
