Chapter 7 - THE PAGE MISSING FROM LUCÍA’S FILE

The original accident file was incomplete.
Mariana saw it within thirty seconds.
Trauma surgeons live inside records.
Sequence matters.
EMS sheet.
Emergency intake.
Imaging.
Operative note.
Toxicology.
Consultation.
Property inventory.
One page was missing.
The vehicle-mechanics attachment.
Lucía had been riding with Alejandro when the crash occurred.
Mariana remembered that much.
Alejandro suffered a broken collarbone and concussion.
He said another driver cut them off in heavy rain.
The other vehicle was never identified.
Police classified it as a single-car loss-of-control crash.
Mariana had never questioned him.
She was grieving.
Then Rachel obtained the original insurance archive.
There it was.
A preliminary mechanical inspection.
The SUV had a known steering defect.
A recall notice had been issued three weeks before the crash.
Mariana stared.
“Did Alejandro know?”
The maintenance record answered.
The dealership had contacted the registered owner twice.
Alejandro.
He postponed the repair.
Reason written on service note:
CUSTOMER DECLINED IMMEDIATE REPAIR — WILL RETURN AFTER BUSINESS TRAVEL.
Mariana could barely breathe.
He knew.
Not that the car would crash.
Not that Lucía would die.
But he knew there was a safety recall and delayed it.
Why had he never told her?
Because guilt.
Because shame.
Because admitting it would destroy the story he told himself.
Then came something worse.
After the crash, Dr. Keller removed the mechanical attachment from the hospital copy before Mariana reviewed Lucía’s records.
Why would a hospital administrator interfere with vehicle evidence?
Rachel traced emails.
Alejandro contacted Keller two days after the accident.
Subject:
HELP.
Keller replied:
I can keep the recall issue out of the medical review. Police is another matter.
Police records, however, contained only the final mechanical summary.
“Who altered that?” Mariana asked.
They didn’t know.
Yet.
Then Carla called.
She was crying.
“I need to tell you one more thing.”
“What?”
“Alejandro didn’t ask me to create the mental-health letters because of the promotion.”
“Then why?”
“He was afraid you would start practicing again.”
Mariana went still.
“What does my career have to do with anything?”
“Because if you returned to Saint Catherine, you could request full archival access as former attending staff.”
Mariana closed her eyes.
He wasn’t ashamed of how she looked.
He was terrified she would become Dr. Mariana Torres again.

Because Dr. Torres knew how to read a chart.
And somewhere in that hospital was proof of what he had hidden after Lucía died.
