Chapter 10 - HER BROTHER KNEW

Rafael arrived the next morning looking like a man walking into his own execution.
Mariana had not spoken to him regularly in years.
They loved each other.
Grief had simply scattered the family.
He sat in Rachel’s office and said:
“I should have told you.”
Mariana did not help him.
“Tell me what?”
Rafael had represented the family during the accidental-death insurance claim.
Alejandro begged him not to emphasize the ignored recall.
Why?
Because the policy had a dispute clause allowing the insurer to investigate whether knowingly operating a recalled vehicle contributed to the loss.
The claim might still have been paid.
But delayed.
Challenged.
Litigated.
Rafael wanted Mariana financially protected.
So he made a terrible decision.
He accepted the simplified police summary without demanding the preliminary mechanical report be attached to the claim file.
“I didn’t alter police evidence.”
“But you knew the summary was incomplete.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought you were going to die too.”
Mariana stared.
Emotionally.
Not physically.
She understood what he meant.
That did not excuse it.
“I protected you the same way Alejandro did.”
Rafael’s voice broke.
“I decided you were too broken to deserve the truth.”
Exactly.
Men who loved her kept confusing protection with permission.
Rafael apologized.
No excuses.
Then he handed her the original attorney file.
Inside was correspondence with Dr. Keller.
And one unexpected letter.
Written by Keller two years after Lucía died.
He wanted to tell Mariana the truth.
Alejandro stopped him.
Keller wrote:
This has gone beyond grief management. Alejandro is using Mariana’s condition to justify financial authority she never granted.
Rafael had never seen it.
The letter was returned unopened after Keller died.
Then Rachel found Keller’s personal archive through his estate.
There was an audio memo.
His voice:
I participated in concealing the recall issue because I believed the family needed time. I did not authorize any later psychiatric certification. If my name appears on incapacity documents after this date, they are false.
Date:
Four years earlier.
That cleared the dead doctor.
Someone had forged his name.
Carla admitted Alejandro gave her the template.
But he claimed he got it from someone else.
Who?
A consultant at Mendoza Industries.
Sergio’s company.
The same person who had helped Alejandro shape his “devoted caregiver” promotion narrative.
Elena Price traced the consultant.
Human Resources executive:

Monica Reyes.
And Monica had received $65,000 from Vega Management Partners.
