Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO HELPED ME FILE FOR DIVORCE

Nicholas Vale had sat across from me while I signed the first divorce documents.
He'd offered tissues when I cried.
He'd told me I deserved a fresh start.
And he'd quietly encouraged me to surrender every financial claim connected to the Moretti family.
At the time, I'd assumed he wanted to help me leave quickly.
Now I understood.
He wanted me to leave with nothing.
And he wanted the trust documents I didn't even know existed to remain buried.
I called my divorce attorney, Sarah Collins, immediately.
"Sarah, I need to ask you something."
She sounded startled.
"Claire? Are you safe?"
"Did Nicholas Vale review my documents?"
"Yes. He consulted on several business holdings."
"Has he contacted you recently?"
A pause.
"He called this morning."
My heart pounded.
"What did he want?"
"He asked whether you'd signed a waiver of inherited corporate interests."
I closed my eyes.
"Did you tell him?"
"No. I refused to discuss confidential matters."
Relief washed through me.
"Sarah, Nicholas isn't who he claims to be."
Another silence.
Then she said, "I was afraid of that."
I sat upright.
"What do you mean?"
"Yesterday, someone attempted to access your client file using credentials assigned to Nicholas's firm."
"Did they succeed?"
"No. Our security team blocked the request."
I gripped the phone.
"Sarah, contact the investigators working with Thomas Bennett. Give them everything you're legally able to provide."
"I will."
Then she lowered her voice.
"Claire, before you hang up, there's something I need to tell you."
"What?"
"Adrian signed the preliminary divorce acknowledgment."
My throat tightened.
"He did?"
"Yes."
For six years, Adrian had treated our marriage as something permanent.
Something he controlled.
Something I could never truly leave.
And now he'd signed the document acknowledging my right to walk away.
"Did he say anything?"
Sarah hesitated.
"He included a letter."
I closed my eyes.
"Can you read it?"
She did.
Claire, I won't fight your right to leave. I won't use money, influence, or fear to keep you beside me.
You asked me once whether I was bringing my wife home or ordering her as a boss.
I finally understand why you asked.
I loved you, but I didn't always treat you like someone whose choices mattered.
Whatever happens next, I will help you discover the truth about your father. Not because you're my wife. Because you deserve it.
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
Sarah waited.
When I finally spoke, my voice was barely audible.
"Thank you."
After the call, I sat beside the window overlooking the Wisconsin lake.
For the first time since leaving Chicago, I missed Adrian without feeling ashamed of it.
That frightened me.
Because missing someone didn't mean returning was wise.
And loving someone didn't mean they had earned another chance.
Then my temporary phone vibrated.
A message from Nicholas Vale.
Claire, your father is alive.
A second message followed.
If you want to meet him, come alone.
Attached was a photograph taken that morning.
An older man sat beside a window holding a newspaper.
His hair was gray.
His face deeply lined.
May you like
But his eyes were unmistakable.
My father's eyes.
