Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE

The first thing Adrian Moretti discovered after I disappeared was that my phone had been left behind.
The second was that I had emptied our joint bank account of exactly zero dollars.
The third frightened him more than either of the others.
I had taken every photograph of my parents.
For six years, Adrian had believed our marriage was the one thing in his life he could never lose. He commanded hundreds of men, controlled warehouses along the Chicago River, and owned enough legitimate companies to make his name appear on buildings across the city.
But when he stood in my parents' empty kitchen holding our divorce papers, he finally confronted something his money couldn't fix.
I had left voluntarily.
And I didn't want to be found.
At least, that was what I wanted him to believe.
In reality, I was sitting in the back of a charter bus heading toward a small town in Wisconsin, with my broken ankle elevated on a worn duffel bag and a woman's voice repeating in my head.
"Your husband wasn't supposed to save either of you."
Those were the words the nurse had whispered to me before my hospital discharge.
She had slipped a folded piece of paper beneath my medication instructions.
At first, I'd assumed she'd mistaken me for another patient.
Then I'd opened it.
There was a photograph of Lily Monroe standing beside one of my kidnappers.
Not during the kidnapping.
Three days before it.
The timestamp was visible.
So was the way Lily smiled at the man.
I had stared at the picture until my hands stopped shaking.
Because Lily hadn't merely been the woman Adrian chose to rescue first.
She might have known the kidnapping was coming.
The nurse had given me no name, only a prepaid phone number and one instruction.
Do not call from Chicago.
So I'd packed one suitcase, placed my wedding ring inside the envelope with the divorce papers, and left.
My destination was a lakeside town called Cedar Falls, where my mother's childhood friend, Margaret Ellis, owned a small bookstore.
Margaret had promised not to tell anyone where I was.
When the bus crossed the Wisconsin state line, my temporary phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I ignored it.
A second message appeared.
Mrs. Moretti, I know why your husband chose Lily.
My breath caught.
A third message followed.
And I have proof that someone changed the orders after he made his decision.
Then a photograph loaded.
It showed Adrian standing in front of the kidnapping command screen.
Beside him was his most trusted lieutenant.
Daniel Russo.

And on Daniel's phone, clearly visible in the photograph, was a message containing my exact location.
Sent twenty minutes before Adrian chose Lily.
