Chapter 9 - THE DEAD UNCLE IN NEVADA

Frank Vale had been living under another name in Nevada for twenty-seven years.
Not hiding from Christopher.
Hiding from Marion.
At least that was his story.
Federal investigators found him outside Reno.
He agreed to return voluntarily after hearing I had been convicted.
When I first saw him, I remembered him immediately.
Not his face.
His laugh.
Childhood memory is strange.
He hugged me.
I did not hug back.
“You let us think you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Your mother.”
Again.
Always.
Frank claimed Marion had framed him for the original $180,000 theft from Christopher’s company.
Christopher believed it at first.
Frank fled before he could be charged because he had prior financial problems and no faith anyone would believe him.
Cowardly.
Understandable.
Still cowardly.
“What proof do you have?”
He handed Nina a storage key.
Apparently every man in my family communicated through keys.
Inside a Reno warehouse were decades of records.
Original invoices.
Bank statements.
Copies of Marion’s transfers.
The red ledger’s missing pages.
And correspondence with Michael.
My stepfather knew Frank was alive.
They had worked together quietly to document Marion’s financial schemes.
“What did Mom want?”
Frank sat back.
“Control.”
Not money alone.
She wanted control over assets by making other people dependent, compromised, or afraid.
Christopher’s first project.
The Phoenix land.
Michael’s finances.
Me.
Chad.
“Chad too?”
Frank nodded.
“Your mother found him before you did.”
We knew that.
But Frank added something new.
“Chad was in debt.”
How much?
Nearly $300,000.
Sports betting.
Private loans.
Tax problems.
Marion cleared most of it.
In return, Chad got close to me.
At first.
Then he genuinely married me.
Then debt returned.
Brenda appeared.
Marion offered another solution.
Frame me.
Trigger the land clause.
Split the proceeds.
“How much was Chad promised?”
“Three million.”
Brenda?
“Five hundred thousand.”
Marion?
Control of my suspended beneficial interest through Chad.
My own mother had constructed the fraud that sent me toward prison.
Frank’s records finally proved the fake vendors had been created from IP addresses connected to Chad and Marion.
Not me.
But one question remained.
The prosecution had expert testimony claiming my computer initiated transfers.
How?
Harold’s old security report gave Chad the method.
But someone had altered forensic logs after seizure.
That required access after law enforcement took my devices.
Nina checked chain-of-custody records.
One technician handled my laptop before forensic imaging.
Name:
Evan Pike.
Same last name as Gregory Pike.
My defense attorney.
His son.

My lawyer had not merely ignored evidence.
His family had helped manufacture it.
