Chapter 12 - THE TAPE FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE

The maintenance structure smelled like dust and hot concrete.

Federal agents entered first.

Then Nina.

Then me.

Christopher stayed outside with Toby.

We found the old trailer behind a false wall.

Inside:

Filing cabinets.

Molded boxes.

An ancient television.

And fourteen mini-DV tapes.

Most were useless.

Construction footage.

Meetings.

Michael recording notes because he distrusted paper.

Tape thirteen changed everything.

Date:

Three days before Michael died.

He sat at a desk.

Older than I remembered him.

Tired.

“Genevieve, if this is ever played for you, I’m sorry.”

I stopped breathing.

Michael explained that Marion had been moving money again.

He had confronted her.

She denied it.

Then he said:

“I do not believe your mother intends to physically harm me.”

That mattered.

“But I do believe she is desperate enough to ruin anyone who blocks her.”

He described medication tampering.

Not proven.

Suspicious.

Then a knock.

Michael turned off the camera.

Except he didn’t.

The lens went dark, but audio continued.

A man entered.

Chad.

My husband.

Years before I supposedly met him.

My knees almost failed.

Chad’s voice was younger.

Nervous.

“Mrs. Hart said you wanted to see me.”

Michael:

“I know she hired you.”

Silence.

Then Chad:

“I haven’t done anything.”

Michael:

“Then walk away.”

My hands turned cold.

Michael knew Chad before our first date.

He had tried to stop it.

Chad said:

“I need the money.”

Michael:

“She will own you forever.”

Then the tape ended.

No murder.

No dramatic crime.

Something almost worse.

Proof that Michael had tried to protect me from the man I later married.

Tape fourteen was recorded the next day.

Michael said Chad contacted him privately.

Chad wanted out.

He admitted Marion paid his debts.

He said he genuinely liked me and no longer wanted to manipulate me.

Michael gave him one condition.

Tell Genevieve everything before proposing.

Chad did not.

He married me instead.

Seven years of betrayal did not begin with hatred.

It began with cowardice.

Then Nina found one final envelope taped beneath the desk.

Inside:

A document signed by Michael transferring his remaining Phoenix land rights directly to me.

Not conditional on criminal status.

Not subject to spouse control.

The later trust amendment suspending my interest after conviction was forged.

May you like

By Marion.

Which meant Chad’s entire plan had been built around a clause that was never valid.
