Chapter 12 - THE SHIPYARD

Police surrounded the shipyard quietly.
No Vance convoy.
No revenge squad.
Elias stayed in the command vehicle until asked for identification support.
That mattered.
Inside the basement, Rose was found alive.
Victor wasn't.
Henry was.
Armed.
Confused.
He surrendered after a brief standoff.
Victor had abandoned his own father.
Typical.
Rose had overheard his plan.
“He's going to the courthouse.”
Why?
My divorce hearing.
He intended to surrender publicly.
Control the story.
Claim Elias framed him.
Use media chaos.
Maybe access me.
Authorities flooded the courthouse.
Victor arrived in a suit.
No weapon.
Smiling.
He walked straight toward cameras and announced:
“My wife has been manipulated by organized crime.”
Then he saw me behind secured doors.
His smile changed.
I walked into court with my lawyer.
Not Elias.
Victor needed the world to see me as someone's possession.
First his.
Then Elias's.
I was neither.
The hearing became a temporary-protection proceeding instead of final divorce because of the arrest.
Victor's attorney argued he deserved contact with the twins.
My lawyer placed DNA evidence on the table.
No biological paternity.
Then medical evidence.
Reproductive fraud.
Then video.
Then financial records.
Then photographs of my injuries.
Victor finally stopped smiling.
The judge suspended all parental claims pending criminal resolution.
Protective order expanded to Noah too.
Then prosecutors arrested him inside the courthouse.
He looked at me.
“You think this ends because they put me in a cell?”
“No.”
I surprised myself with how calm I sounded.
“It ends because I stopped believing you decide when it ends.”
He was taken away.
Henry later confessed to sabotaging Jonathan's warehouse decades earlier.
Not intending to kill him, he claimed.
Only intimidate.
That phrase again.
Violence dressed as pressure.
He implicated Malcolm in retaliatory crimes too.
No family emerged clean.
Elias opened old Vance records voluntarily.
More investigations.
More seizures.
More truth.
Then Rose told me something before surgery for injuries suffered during the kidnapping.
“I need you to know about Elias.”
My heart tightened.
“What?”
“He knew Victor wanted a Vance heir before he found you.”
I froze.
“How?”
Marcus had warned Elias months earlier that someone was investigating Vance fertility records.
Elias did not know it involved me.
Did not know pregnancies existed.
But he knew a threat was forming.
And he chose not to investigate aggressively because he feared exposing Julian's disappearance to rivals.
That delay gave Victor time.
Elias hadn't caused what happened.
May you like
But he had chosen secrecy too.
I had to decide what that meant for us.
