Chapter 11 - THE DAY ELIAS MET MY FATHER

Elias remembered Jonathan immediately once he saw the photograph.

He had been nineteen.

Sent by Malcolm to persuade Jonathan to return to the family.

Jonathan refused.

“You tell Malcolm my daughter will never grow up inside this.”

His daughter.

Me.

Elias had heard about me before.

Not my name.

Just a little girl Jonathan wanted protected.

Then the warehouse exploded.

Elias survived because Jonathan pushed him behind a concrete barrier.

My father died saving the man who would later save me.

I cried until I couldn't breathe.

Elias sat beside me.

No touch until I reached for his hand.

Then I did.

“I owe him my life,” Elias said.

“You don't owe me his debt.”

“I know.”

Important.

Then Elias admitted something else.

After the explosion, Malcolm investigated Henry Miller.

Could never prove it.

But Malcolm quietly supported Rose financially for several years.

She stopped taking money after meeting Victor.

Why?

Victor told her the Vances had caused Jonathan's death.

Same tactic he used on Julian.

Turn grief into loyalty.

He built his life by telling wounded people the wrong enemy.

Then Victor's federal filing collapsed under forensic review.

Emails fake.

Metadata inconsistent.

Samuel's cooperation destroyed the story.

Custody petition dismissed.

Protective orders issued.

My divorce moved forward.

Victor faced charges for assault, reproductive coercion, kidnapping-related conspiracy, financial fraud, and attempted murder.

Still, he remained free temporarily on strict conditions while prosecutors assembled the larger case.

That terrified me.

Then he disappeared.

Ankle monitor cut.

Car abandoned.

One man missing with him.

Henry Miller.

His father.

Still alive.

Seventy-two.

The older architect of the feud.

They weren't fleeing.

They took Rose.

My mother.

The nursing facility reported two men posing as federal transport officers.

By the time anyone realized, she was gone.

Victor sent one message.

Bring the original Vance trust activation key.

Or Rose dies.

I looked at Elias.

“No.”

He nodded.

No argument.

We involved law enforcement.

Tracked vehicle cameras.

Rose's medical bracelet transmitted occasional location pings because the facility used a monitoring system.

Victor didn't know.

They were heading toward the Hudson waterfront.

An abandoned shipyard owned by Henry.

The same place Jonathan had once worked.

History trying to repeat itself.

Then Elias received another message.

Not from Victor.

From Rose.

One word sent through her medical device's emergency text function:

BASEMENT.

May you like

She was alive.

And still fighting.
