Chapter 7 - PAUL HAD LET GRANT TAKE THE BLAME FOR SOMETHING HE DID

The ledger was authentic.

At least preliminary.

Henry’s $9 million side account.

Seven million transferred into Whitmore.

Authorization:

Paul Whitmore.

Only Paul.

Grant’s signature did not appear.

Why had Paul told us they acted jointly?

Because Grant approved after?

Maybe.

Then board minutes.

No formal approval.

Emails.

PAUL:

I moved the money.

GRANT:

You did what?

Paul:

Company needs it.

Grant:

That account isn’t ours.

Paul:

It will be if Whitmore survives.

Grant initially objected.

That shocked me.

Then:

GRANT:

Put it back.

Paul:

With what cash?

Grant:

We’ll refinance.

So Grant knew after transfer and concealed.

Complicity.

But not origin.

Then months later:

GRANT:

If Dad were alive he’d kill us.

Paul:

Dad is dead.

Same phrase brothers used differently.

Then three years.

Funds not restored.

Grant eventually stopped objecting because company benefited.

Then he used secret as leverage against Paul.

So Paul was not innocent reformer.

He had voted to suspend Grant partly because investigation might reveal side account and he wanted narrative controlled.

Then who sent ledger?

Unknown.

Maybe Grant.

Would he expose brother to save self?

Yes.

But note typed.

Could be.

Then trust hearing.

Linda Harrington testified.

She found both brothers breached duties.

Paul unauthorized transfer.

Grant concealment and later use as leverage, plus alleged other matters.

Pending final.

Temporary family trust votes transferred to independent protector—not me—until litigation resolved.

Good.

Court avoided appearing coup.

I was relieved.

Grant furious because he wanted binary enemy.

Independent protector harder to demonize.

Then Whitmore company restructuring.

Turnaround firm found business had valuable assets.

Could survive.

Need $25 million liquidity.

Pension fund paused but not withdrawn.

Could return if governance cleaned.

Harbor Ridge (Julian) offered refinancing at market terms through independent committee.

I recused.

Cole Industrial might extend existing loan but David recused due personal mess with Sabrina/Grant.

Good governance.

Another bank eventually offered consortium financing.

No need family rescue.

Whitmore stabilized.

Grant’s argument I was destroying company weakened.

Then environmental/easement issue lake project.

We paused project.

No fraudulent “common control.”

Maybe renegotiate with Rowan legitimately.

Would I grant easement?

At fair market value, independent appraisal, after divorce.

Maybe.

That was business.

Then divorce.

Grant’s attorneys shifted.

He no longer demanded villa.

Good.

He demanded half Rowan shares?

Premarital/separate trust complicated.

Likely not.

He claimed appreciation due marital efforts.

Could be some claim.

Courts decide.

I did not aim to leave him penniless.

I wanted accurate.

Then Sabrina and David divorce separately.

Sabrina’s WDG interest voided? If she had no consideration and fraud, likely challenged.

She surrendered claims to disputed company assets in exchange for resolving? Her attorney would negotiate.

No need detail.

Then WDG audit found something surprising.

Not all money went to luxury.

$2.2 million funded a struggling housing project in Gastonia that Grant did not want board to know was over budget.

He used WDG to hide losses.

Again personal and business mixed.

Some money bought Sabrina assets.

Some covered project.

So prosecutors/regulators would distinguish.

Then one WDG transaction:

$1.4 million payment to:

ROWAN CIVIC FOUNDATION.

My name again.

I had a foundation?

No.

Created four years ago.

Director:

Margaret Rowan.

My mother.

I stared.

Mom looked shocked.

“Not me.”

Incorporation signature looked like hers.

Could be forged.

Bank records:

Money then transferred to a nonprofit housing initiative.

Legitimate beneficiary.

Who did that?

Grant?

Maybe he created foundation in my mother’s name to make charitable donations without board approval.

Why?

Tax?

Reputation?

Then one email:

GRANT:

Claire wants this kept quiet.

Again using me.

Recipient:

Elise Warren.

Whitmore philanthropic director.

Elise believed.

The money funded affordable-housing project I had advocated publicly.

Grant may have diverted company funds to support a cause I wanted, then used my name as justification.

Why not ask board?

Because project did not meet company return targets.

He wanted to surprise me?

Maybe.

This complicates villain.

Elise said:

“Grant told me it was your anniversary gift.”

I stared.

Four years ago, Grant had given me a framed photo and told me he donated “some money” to housing coalition.

I cried.

He had apparently donated $1.4 million of company money through fake foundation in my family’s name.

A romantic gesture financed by shareholders.

That was Grant.

Grand.

Generous.

Dishonest.

He blurred.

Then I confronted him during deposition break.

“Why?”

He looked exhausted.

“You wanted that project built.”

“So you stole money?”

“I moved money.”

“Without authority.”

“Yes.”

“Used my mother’s name.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because when you looked at me that anniversary and said it was the first decent thing Whitmore had done all year, I thought it was worth it.”

That answer hurt more than selfishness.

He wanted my admiration enough to cheat for it.

Then:

“When did you start hating me?”

He looked shocked.

“I never hated you.”

“You forged my name.”

“I thought what was mine was yours and what was yours was mine.”

“That isn’t love.”

“I know that now.”

Maybe.

Then:

“Did you bring Sabrina to villa because you loved her?”

Long pause.

“I wanted you to hurt.”

There.

Honest.

“Why?”

“Because every room I entered, people knew you were smarter.”

I froze.

“You thought I humiliated you?”

“You didn’t have to.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You fixed things I broke before anyone saw they were broken.”

“And you resented me for saving you?”

“Yes.”

That was core.

Then:

“Sabrina made me feel impressive.”

I almost pitied.

Almost.

Then I asked:

“Did you love her?”

“Yes.”

Could be.

People can love and still use.

Then:

“Why promise her my house?”

“Because I knew it would hurt you.”

Not business easement only.

Personal too.

Multiple motives.

Then deposition resumed.

Grant admitted several things.

Denied criminal intent.

Investigations ongoing.

Then news.

Paul disappeared.

Not fled country necessarily.

He missed trust hearing.

Phone off.

His attorney could not reach.

Last transaction:

$3.4 million moved from personal brokerage into escrow.

Recipient:

HENRY WHITMORE EMPLOYEE RESTITUTION TRUST.

He was trying to repay side account.

Then car found at Charlotte airport.

No Paul.

Flight records:

One ticket to Boston.

Passenger:

Paul Whitmore.

Why Boston?

Julian Rowan’s office.

But Julian said Paul never arrived.

Then security video showed Paul leaving airport with a woman.

I recognized her.

Natalie Pierce.

Grant’s former mistress/broker.

Why was Paul with Natalie?

Then Natalie called me.

“Claire, Paul knows where Henry’s missing two million went.”

What missing two million?

Side account nine.

Seven moved company.

Two supposedly retained.

Where did two go?

Nobody had traced.

Natalie said:

“Henry didn’t leave it in cash.”

“He bought something.”

What?

“Rowan shares.”

My company?

No.

Rowan Architectural Holdings did not exist yet.

Maybe predecessor trust.

Henry Whitmore had secretly purchased an interest in my grandfather’s architectural firm decades ago.

Could mean Whitmore had old claim to Rowan.

Then Grant’s belief “Rowan basically mine” may have family foundation.

Natalie said Paul found certificates.

Where?

Henry’s safe.

And Paul was bringing them to Julian.

Why?

To negotiate.

Then Natalie whispered:

“Paul isn’t missing.”

“Where is he?”

“He’s at your mother’s house.”

I froze.

My mother was supposedly in Asheville visiting sister.

I called.

No answer.

Then camera at her house showed Paul entering with Natalie.

And a third person.

An elderly man.

Julian saw still image.

His face changed.

“That’s Samuel Rowan.”

My grandfather.

Impossible.

He died twenty-three years ago.

Closed funeral? Let's avoid resurrection if body known. Maybe not grandfather, his brother. Could be Samuel's brother Victor Rowan, presumed dead? Better.

Julian said:

“That’s Victor Rowan.”

My grandfather’s younger brother.

Reported dead nineteen years ago in boating accident, no body.

Okay.

Victor Rowan.

The man who once co-owned Rowan architecture.

May you like

And according to old corporate files—

he had been Henry Whitmore’s secret business partner.
