Chapter 6 - SABRINA DISCOVERED GRANT HAD PROMISED THE SAME HOUSE TO SOMEONE ELSE

Sabrina called me at 6:15 on a Sunday morning.

I almost didn’t answer.

Then she said:

“There’s another woman.”

I laughed.

Not because funny.

Because of course.

“Grant has another mistress?”

“No.”

Pause.

“Maybe.”

Wonderful.

Her name:

Natalie Pierce.

Forty.

Commercial broker.

Worked on several Whitmore acquisitions.

Grant had told Sabrina Natalie was “obsessed with him.”

That meant nothing.

Then Sabrina found emails in a cloud account she shared with Grant.

Natalie and Grant had been romantically involved two years earlier.

Before Sabrina.

Did overlap?

Maybe first months.

Then ended.

But Grant had promised Natalie something too.

The villa?

Not ownership.

A lakefront guesthouse planned on adjacent Whitmore parcel.

Grant wrote:

Once Claire signs easement, the whole north cove becomes ours.

Ours.

Natalie had believed she would live there.

So Sabrina was not first future Mrs. Whitmore.

Maybe not even second.

Then why did Grant choose Sabrina publicly?

David’s money?

Potential.

Sabrina’s husband controlled Cole Industrial investment.

Grant may have pursued her partly for financial access.

She went silent when I suggested.

Then:

“He said David was weak.”

I knew Grant.

He respected money, not people.

Then David joined call.

He had found texts:

GRANT:

If Sabrina leaves David, Cole investment gets complicated.

NATALIE:

Then don’t let her leave until Whitmore closes.

This was two years ago?

Wait Sabrina affair 11 months. Could be Grant and Natalie discussing hypothetical before affair started, perhaps Grant already targeting Sabrina socially. He knew her through David.

Then:

GRANT:

She likes me.

Natalie:

Everyone likes you until they know you.

Sharp.

Maybe Natalie grew disillusioned.

Then why send email?

Natalie might be anonymous source? Maybe.

We contacted her.

She agreed.

She had ended relationship after Grant asked her to backdate a broker opinion for land valuation.

She refused.

Then he threatened career.

She left Whitmore deals.

She knew he began flirting with Sabrina at investor dinners.

She warned Sabrina indirectly?

No.

Fear.

Then two weeks ago, Natalie sent David anonymous bracelet email.

Ah.

Why?

She saw Grant and Sabrina at jewelry store.

Realized pattern escalating.

She wanted someone to stop him.

So source was Natalie, not Samantha. Wait Samantha admitted sent email earlier. Contradiction. We can say there were two anonymous warnings? We already said Samantha admitted the anonymous email. Better adjust: Sabrina found a separate anonymous folder? Let's maintain. Could say Natalie sent a second anonymous tip to Samantha, who then emailed David. Yes.

Natalie had sent evidence to Samantha.

Samantha forwarded anonymously to David.

Chain.

Then Natalie brought land files.

The planned Whitmore Lake Norman project was more unstable than board knew.

Access depended on villa.

Environmental permits incomplete.

Grant had represented access “under common control.”

False.

Because Rowan owned villa separately.

Lenders relied.

If access unavailable, project value drops.

Again, my property used as implied collateral.

Then Sabrina said:

“He told me once you didn’t understand business ownership.”

I almost choked.

I designed half his business.

But Grant’s contempt grew because I trusted him.

Then another revelation.

Grant had promised Sabrina a twenty-percent economic interest in lake development after divorce.

Not merely villa.

That could be worth millions.

In exchange for what?

She would persuade David not to call Cole investment.

So Grant expected mistress to influence husband after divorce.

He viewed people as channels.

Then David read texts.

Sabrina:

I CAN’T CONTROL DAVID AFTER I LEAVE HIM.

Grant:

YOU’VE BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS.

David looked like he had been slapped.

Maybe Grant manipulated her ego.

Then Sabrina said:

“I never promised that.”

But she had not rejected either.

Ambiguity.

Then I asked:

“Why did you come to my villa that night?”

She stared.

“Because I wanted to win.”

Honest.

“Win what?”

“You.”

That surprised me.

She wanted proof Grant chose her over wife.

House.

Bedroom.

Twenty-minute eviction.

The humiliation itself was part of fantasy.

Not only money.

She wanted symbolic victory.

Then she said:

“I’m ashamed.”

Good.

Shame is not restitution.

Then she offered cooperation.

Full messages.

She would testify about Grant’s representations.

David’s divorce attorney separately handled their marriage.

No alliance.

Then she gave key detail.

The divorce agreement Grant brought to villa had been revised that afternoon after one call with:

Paul Whitmore.

Grant’s brother.

Paul had voted to suspend him.

But earlier that day?

He had spoken with Grant.

What about?

Sabrina heard Grant say:

“Claire will sign tonight, then we can fix family trust tomorrow.”

Paul answered? She couldn’t hear.

Could Paul have been involved deeper?

We confronted him.

Paul admitted.

Grant called asking him to support temporary transfer of family trust voting rights after divorce.

He said no.

Then Grant threatened:

“If Claire gets into trust, she’ll find Dad’s side account.”

What side account?

Paul froze.

We had not heard.

Henry Whitmore had maintained a private account outside family trust.

$9 million.

After death, it was supposed to fund grandchildren education and employee hardship.

Where was it?

Paul said:

“Gone.”

What?

Three years after Henry died, account emptied.

Who authorized?

Paul and Grant jointly.

Why?

They used it to rescue Whitmore during a recession.

$7 million injected.

$2 million retained.

Was that allowed?

Trust document maybe not.

It was intended restricted.

They told themselves saving company protected employees.

Then never restored.

Paul had hidden too.

That explained Grant’s threat.

If I gained emergency voting rights in family trust, audit could uncover Henry side account misuse.

Paul voted suspension not purely integrity.

He may have been trying to get ahead.

I stared.

“You both used restricted family funds?”

Paul nodded.

“Yes.”

“Did employees know?”

“No.”

“Grandchildren?”

“No.”

Then:

“Did money save company?”

“Yes.”

Maybe.

Still unauthorized.

Then hardship fund could have helped employees during layoffs.

Instead used company.

Moral complication.

Paul promised restitution from his shares.

Grant had not.

Then family trust protector clause.

If both brothers breached fiduciary duties, independent protector could remove both.

Who became voting holder?

Claire.

Again.

Henry really did not trust sons.

But now if clause triggered, I could control family shares.

Grant would scream coup.

Paul could too.

I did not want power created by their misconduct.

But someone needed stewardship.

Independent trust protector—retired judge Linda Harrington—would decide.

Then Linda called.

She had reviewed Henry’s sealed instructions.

“There is a second successor.”

If Claire could not or would not serve.

Who?

“Julian Rowan.”

My newly discovered brother.

No.

Why would Henry Whitmore name a man none of us knew?

Because Henry knew Julian.

Again.

Apparently our fathers had been coordinating safeguards around Grant for years.

This was getting older.

Then Linda said:

“Henry and Julian met six years before Henry died.”

Why?

Julian managed distressed debt then too.

Henry had considered selling part of Whitmore.

Julian advised.

He learned Grant’s risk-taking.

Henry trusted him.

So Julian’s current debt position was not coincidence entirely.

He had historical knowledge.

Then I asked Julian:

“You said my father asked you to watch Grant.”

“Yes.”

“Did Henry?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

I nearly laughed.

“You left that out.”

“I thought one dead father at a time.”

Not funny.

A little funny.

Then Henry’s sealed letter:

If Grant and Paul ever compromise the family trust, control must move outside Whitmore blood long enough to protect employees and creditors.

Outside blood.

Me.

Or Julian.

Henry had deliberately created external restraint.

Then final line:

Do not let Grant convince Claire that saving him is the same as saving Whitmore.

There it was again.

Everyone knew pattern before I did.

Then Grant filed emergency motion to prevent trust protector from transferring votes.

His argument:

Claire Rowan Whitmore and Julian Rowan are acting in concert to seize company.

Factually false.

But optics strong.

Court scheduled hearing.

The night before, I received courier package.

No sender.

Inside:

Henry Whitmore’s original side-account ledger.

And a note:

CLAIRE, GRANT IS NOT THE ONE WHO EMPTIED IT.

I stared.

Then:

PAUL DID.

May you like

If true, Paul had just confessed selectively while blaming “we.”

And Grant might have been covering his brother for years.
