Chapter 2 - THE TEXTS I NEVER SENT

Vanessa handed me her phone because Adrian told her to.
Not because she wanted to.
The screenshots were convincing.
Painfully convincing.
My name appeared at the top.
My old profile photograph.
Messages:
I KNOW ABOUT YOU AND DANIEL.
I’M NOT INTERESTED IN CONTROLLING HIS PERSONAL LIFE.
WE HAVE AN ARRANGEMENT.
JUST DON’T BRING DRAMA INTO MY HOUSE.
I read them twice.
Then a third time.
“I never sent these.”
Vanessa stared at Daniel.
“You told me she agreed.”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“It was complicated.”
“No,” I said.
“It was fake.”
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Were these fake?”
He did not answer.
Adrian did.
“Daniel.”
Finally:
“Yes.”
Vanessa slapped the countertop with both hands.
“You made me look insane.”
I almost laughed.
She had carried suitcases into my house and smiled while my husband told me to accept her.
She did not need much help.
Still, the fake messages mattered.
They explained why she seemed so comfortable.
Not innocent.
But manipulated.
I asked:
“How long?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Eight months.”
My chest tightened.
Three months of credit-card evidence.
Eight months of affair.
Daniel had been better at hiding it than I knew.
“What did he tell you about me?”
She hesitated.
“Vanessa.”
“That you were emotionally checked out.”
I said nothing.
“That you cared more about work than marriage.”
Of course.
“That you two hadn’t really been husband and wife for years.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“I was unhappy.”
I looked at him.
“You could have said that to me.”
“I tried.”
“No. You complained about dinner being late and my work trips.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Neither is moving your mistress into my guest room.”
Adrian leaned against the counter.
His anger had become colder.
“What did Vanessa tell you about me?”
Daniel looked confused.
I answered for him.
“She said she was divorced.”
Adrian nodded.
Then looked at his wife.
“What did you tell Daniel happened to our marriage?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“That you cheated.”
Adrian’s mouth opened.
“You told him I cheated?”
She looked away.
Apparently Daniel was not the only one creating fictional spouses.
Adrian laughed without humor.
“Did you mention the couples counselor?”
“No.”
“The trip to Napa last month?”
Daniel’s head snapped toward Vanessa.
“You went to Napa with him?”
Her face flushed.
“It was already booked.”
Daniel stared.
“You told me you were at a conference.”
For one absurd second, I watched my husband experience the exact sensation he had been giving me for months.
I felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Adrian gathered the papers.
“I didn’t come here to fight over who cheated better.”
Good.
He looked at Vanessa.
“I came because ninety thousand dollars is missing.”
She crossed her arms.
“It’s invested.”
“In what?”
Daniel answered:
“A consulting acquisition.”
I looked at him.
“What acquisition?”
Silence.
“Daniel.”
He finally admitted D&V Strategic planned to purchase a small software firm specializing in procurement analytics.
Price:
$420,000.
Deposit due next week:
$120,000.
That explained the transfers.
But not why Daniel was using Hale Advisory money.
I asked:
“What percentage do you own?”
“Fifty.”
“Vanessa?”
“Fifty.”
“And where is your fifty percent capital coming from?”
His expression changed.
There.
The real question.
Hale Advisory had originally been created with $400,000 from my separate investment account.
I owned sixty percent.
Daniel owned forty.
He managed operations.
The company was profitable now.
But its money did not belong solely to him.
“Daniel?”
He whispered:
“I was going to repay Hale Advisory after closing.”
I closed my eyes.
“How much have you moved?”
He said nothing.
Adrian answered from the bank records.
“At least fifty-four thousand five hundred that I can see.”
I looked at Daniel.
“That’s only what he can see.”
Silence.
I picked up my phone and called Leah Morgan, my forensic accountant.
“Claire?” she answered sleepily.
“I need you to pull Hale Advisory tonight.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t.”
I looked at him.
That one word told me everything.
“What am I going to find?”
His face went pale.
Then my phone buzzed while Leah was still on the line.
Bank alert.
Hale Advisory.
Outgoing transfer scheduled:
$130,000.
Destination:
D&V Strategic Partners.
Scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
Daniel had planned to move another $130,000 the next morning.
May you like
Enough to complete the acquisition deposit.
He had expected me to wake up with his mistress living upstairs while my money quietly financed their new company.
