Chapter 1 - THE MAN AT MY FRONT DOOR

For the first time that night, Daniel stopped smiling.

Vanessa did more than stop smiling.

She backed into the kitchen island so hard that the champagne bottle rattled.

“Adrian?”

The tall man in the charcoal coat looked at her suitcases.

Then at Daniel.

Then finally at the broken wineglass on my floor.

“Interesting wellness retreat.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire, who the hell is this?”

The man answered before I could.

“Adrian Cole.”

He took off his wet coat.

“Vanessa’s husband.”

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“You said you were divorced.”

“I said separated.”

“No. You said divorced.”

Adrian gave one short laugh.

“We aren’t even separated.”

That changed the room.

Vanessa recovered first.

“Adrian, don’t do this here.”

“You told me you were staying with Natalie for a week.”

“I was going to explain.”

“When?”

He looked at her suitcases.

“After you moved into another man’s house?”

Daniel turned toward me.

“You knew?”

“For four days.”

His face twisted.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

I almost admired the audacity.

“You brought your married girlfriend into my home and announced an open marriage without asking me.”

“That isn’t—”

“No.”

I raised one hand.

“You don’t get to be offended by my timing.”

Adrian looked at me.

“May I?”

He held up a thin folder.

I nodded.

He placed it on the kitchen counter.

Vanessa’s expression changed immediately.

“What is that?”

“Bank records.”

She stopped breathing.

Adrian continued.

“Two days ago, ninety thousand dollars disappeared from our joint investment account.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What?”

She glared at Adrian.

“That money was mine too.”

“That isn’t the question.”

He opened the folder.

The transfer had gone to a business account.

D&V STRATEGIC PARTNERS LLC.

Daniel’s face drained.

I recognized the name.

So did he.

I looked at him.

“D and V?”

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa whispered:

“It’s an investment.”

Adrian laughed.

“No. It’s a company formed six weeks ago by you and Daniel.”

I stared at my husband.

Daniel had his own consulting company already.

Hale Advisory.

The company I had helped capitalize four years earlier.

So why did he need another company?

I picked up the papers.

D&V Strategic Partners.

Managers:

Daniel Hale.

Vanessa Cole.

Business purpose:

Private consulting and acquisition services.

Formation date:

Six weeks earlier.

My voice stayed calm.

“Were you planning to tell me about this company?”

Daniel finally found his voice.

“It was preliminary.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You accepted ninety thousand dollars from my wife.”

Daniel snapped:

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa grabbed her champagne.

Her hand shook.

“We were building something.”

“What?” I asked.

She looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

Adrian continued.

“The ninety thousand wasn’t the first transfer.”

My stomach tightened.

He turned another page.

Three smaller deposits had entered D&V Strategic during the previous month.

$14,500.

$22,000.

$18,000.

Source:

Hale Advisory operating account.

My husband had been moving money from the consulting business I funded into a secret company with his mistress.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Claire, that isn’t what it looks like.”

I laughed softly.

“I have spent fifteen years tracing financial fraud. Please never say that sentence to me.”

His jaw tightened.

“It was temporary.”

Of course.

Temporary.

The favorite word of people using money that does not belong where they put it.

I looked at Adrian.

“How did you find me?”

He hesitated.

“Because Vanessa mentioned you.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

I looked at her.

Her eyes shifted.

Adrian continued.

“She told me Daniel’s wife knew about their relationship.”

“No.”

Daniel said:

“Claire—”

“No.”

I kept looking at Adrian.

“What exactly did Vanessa tell you?”

He answered:

“That Daniel and Claire had an open marriage.”

I slowly turned toward my husband.

Vanessa had been told I consented.

I had been told I had no choice.

Then Adrian delivered the final sentence.

“And she showed me screenshots of messages supposedly written by you proving it.”

Every muscle in my body went still.

“I never wrote anything like that.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He looked at the floor.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

Daniel had not simply cheated on me.

He had been manufacturing two different versions of me for two different people.
