Chapter 9 - ELENA TORRES FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Elena’s room was empty.
Not officially hers.
Guest suite 7.
Paid cash.
Used six times in four months.
Security footage showed her leaving at 6:12 that morning.
Dark coat.
Head scarf.
No luggage.
Maya watched the video.
Her mother looked healthier than Maya expected.
Still fragile.
But walking.
Alert.
Not like a woman drowning in medical debt.
Maya felt betrayal sharpen.
“Her rehabilitation center…”
Gabriel looked at her.
“What?”
“She told me she lived in assisted rehabilitation because her health was failing.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“She hasn’t lived there in months.”
Maya sat down.
Everything she had worked for.
The bakery.
The extra shifts.
The freezing walks.
The debt.
Her mother had lied.
“Why?”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“To keep you away from this.”
Maya laughed bitterly.
“By letting me destroy myself?”
No answer.
Julian stepped closer.
“We’ll find her.”
Maya looked at him.
“No.”
He frowned.
“I will.”
She called her mother.
Voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
Then a text arrived.
From Elena.
COME ALONE.
Maya showed no one for three seconds.
Julian noticed anyway.
“No.”
She glared.
“You don’t even know what it says.”
“I know your face.”
Despite everything, she almost smiled.
Elena’s location was an old laundromat in Little Village.
Maya remembered it.
Her mother worked there when Maya was small.
Julian followed at a distance despite Maya’s protest.
She knew he would.
She stopped pretending otherwise.
Elena sat in the back room.
No bodyguards.
No weapon visible.
Maya entered.
“Mom.”
Elena looked up.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Mija.”
“Don’t.”
Elena stopped.
Maya placed the debt notices on the table.
“You knew.”
Elena looked down.
“You knew Victor was collecting from me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me work nights.”
“I needed you to stay away from Julian’s business.”
Maya laughed.
“So you made me vulnerable to another criminal?”
“I didn’t know Victor would approach you.”
“Gabriel said the same thing.”
Elena froze.
“You found him.”
“Yes.”
Her mother closed her eyes.
Maya’s anger rose.
“You knew he was alive.”
“Yes.”
“My whole life?”
“No.”
“How long?”
“Twelve years.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he was being hunted.”
“By Samuel Kane?”
Elena looked surprised.
Then scared.
“So you know about Samuel.”
“Tell me everything.”
Elena twisted her fingers.
“Samuel was Dominic’s partner before anyone knew the Croft name.”
“What did he want?”
“Control of the routes.”
“Drug routes?”
“Everything. shipping. weapons. gambling. unions.”
Maya’s stomach turned.
“Gabriel found proof.”
“The second ledger?”
“Yes.”
“Did he steal it?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Elena looked at Maya.
“I did.”
Silence.
Maya stared.
“The second ledger was yours?”
“I took it from Dominic’s office after Pier Six.”
“Why?”
“Because it proved Gabriel hadn’t betrayed anyone.”
“So why hide it?”
“To keep Samuel from killing him.”
Maya leaned closer.
“Then how did it end up in my room?”
“I gave it to Evelyn.”
Everything connected.
“Why now?”
Elena’s face crumpled.
“Because Samuel found out you existed.”
Maya stared.
“He already knew I existed.”
“No.”
“What?”
“He knew Gabriel had a child.”
“But not who.”
Maya stopped breathing.
“Until when?”
“Three years ago.”
Same time Victor’s debt appeared.
Same period Maya’s financial problems began.
Victor had not randomly found her.
He had been sent.
“Samuel used Victor to get close.”
“Yes.”
“Why the loan?”
“To make you desperate.”
“For access to Julian.”
Elena nodded.
Maya felt sick.
“So none of this was accidental.”
“No.”
“My debt?”
“No.”
“The bakery?”
Elena looked away.
Maya froze.
“What about the bakery?”
“It’s owned through one of Samuel’s companies.”
The air left Maya’s lungs.
Her second job.
Her escape.
The place where Victor met her.
All designed.
“Rosa?”
“She doesn’t know.”
“Who hired me?”
Elena whispered:
“Victor.”
Maya felt trapped inside years of fake choices.
Then Julian’s voice came from the doorway.
“Enough.”
Maya spun.
Elena went pale.
“Julian.”
He stepped inside.
“You knew she was being targeted and said nothing.”
Elena stood.
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
Julian’s expression became dangerous.
“You left her exposed.”
“You don’t understand Samuel.”
“No.”
Julian closed the door.
“But I’m about to.”
Elena shook her head.
“You can’t fight him like Dominic did.”
“Dominic lost.”
“Exactly.”
Maya looked between them.
“What does Samuel want now?”
Elena’s voice dropped.
“The black ledger and the second ledger together.”
“Why?”
“Because one contains the names.”
Julian nodded.
“And the other contains proof.”
Elena looked at him.
“Together, they can either control the city…”
She looked at Maya.
“…or burn it.”
Maya whispered:
“Where is the black ledger?”
Elena went still.
Julian noticed.
“You know.”
Elena looked at the floor.
“Victor never stole it.”
Julian’s face hardened.
“What?”
“The ledger taken from your safe was a copy.”
Derek had said nothing about a copy.
Maya stared.
“Then where is the original?”
Elena looked directly at Julian.
“Your father buried it with Dominic Croft.”
Silence.
Then Maya understood the problem.
Dominic’s grave had been sealed for twelve years.
Unless someone had already opened it.
Julian’s phone rang.
Derek.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
Maya watched him.
Derek’s voice came through the speaker.
“Julian…”
May you like
Pause.
“Someone dug up your father’s grave.”
