Chapter 10 - THE COFFIN WAS EMPTY

By dawn, Julian Croft’s family mausoleum was surrounded by police, private security, and men who knew better than to ask questions.
The stone door had been forced.
Dominic Croft’s crypt stood open.
Julian walked toward it alone at first.
Maya followed.
He did not stop her.
Inside, the coffin lid had been removed.
The black ledger was gone.
That much they expected.
What they did not expect was the coffin itself.
Empty.
No bones.
No remains.
Nothing.
Julian stood perfectly still.
Derek whispered:
“No.”
Maya looked at Julian.
“You buried him.”
“I saw the coffin sealed.”
“Did you see the body inside?”
Julian’s silence answered.
Derek swore.
Elena sat on a stone bench.
Her face had gone completely white.
“This changes everything.”
Julian turned.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Did Dominic fake his death?”
“I don’t know.”
Gabriel arrived shortly after sunrise under security.
He looked into the empty coffin and laughed once.
Not from humor.
From disbelief.
“Of course.”
Maya turned.
“You’re not surprised?”
Gabriel looked at Julian.
“Your father always said death was the cleanest exit.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t mean he used it.”
“No.”
Gabriel stepped closer to the crypt.
“But Samuel would.”
Maya frowned.
“What?”
Gabriel looked at the empty coffin.
“If Dominic’s body was never here, then someone either moved it…”
He paused.
“…or Dominic walked away.”
Julian’s expression darkened.
Derek checked old burial records.
Funeral home.
Private embalmer.
Closed casket.
Three authorized family representatives.
Julian, then twenty-one.
Samuel Kane.
Evelyn Calder.
Julian stared at the names.
“Evelyn.”
They called her.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Security went to her apartment.
Empty.
One suitcase gone.
Passport missing.
Maya’s stomach tightened.
“She ran.”
Elena shook her head.
“Or Samuel took her.”
Then Maya’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Photograph.
Evelyn Calder sitting in a chair.
Alive.
Holding a newspaper from that morning.
Behind her stood a man.
Only his torso visible.
Dark suit.
Older hands.
Silver ring.
Julian went still.
“That ring.”
Maya looked at him.
“What?”
“My father wore it.”
Everyone froze.
Second photo.
The camera angle changed.
The man’s face remained cropped.
But his hand rested on Evelyn’s shoulder.
On his finger:
Dominic Croft’s signet ring.
Maya whispered:
“Could Samuel have it?”
“Yes.”
“Could anyone?”
“Yes.”
Then a message arrived.
COME TO PIER SIX.
ALONE.
Elena started shaking.
“No.”
Maya looked at her.
“That’s where Gabriel disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“That’s where all of this started.”
Gabriel stared at the message.
“And maybe where it ends.”
Julian said:
“No one goes alone.”
Maya almost argued.
Then stopped.
She was tired of other people designing her choices.
She looked at Julian.
“We go together.”
He nodded.
By noon, Pier Six was abandoned.
Winter wind cut across the river.
Old warehouses stood behind rusted gates.
Julian’s security spread out.
Derek stayed near Maya.
Gabriel walked beside Elena.
Twenty-four years after one night shattered all their lives, they returned to the same concrete dock.
A black sedan waited near the water.
Empty.
Then speakers mounted somewhere overhead crackled.
A man’s voice came through.
Older.
Deep.
Julian stopped breathing.
“Julian.”
Maya looked at him.
He had gone pale.
“Do you know the voice?”
Julian whispered:
“Yes.”
The voice continued.
“You’ve become exactly what I hoped.”
Derek stared toward the warehouses.
Elena covered her mouth.
Gabriel looked murderous.
Julian stepped forward.
“Dominic?”
Silence.
Then laughter.
Not loud.
Almost affectionate.
“My son.”
Maya’s skin went cold.
Dominic Croft was alive.
Or someone wanted them to believe he was.
Julian shouted:
“Show yourself.”
The voice answered:
“Not yet.”
A screen lit up across the warehouse wall.
Security footage.
Live.
Evelyn.
Tied to a chair.
Victor Bellini beside her.
Alive despite his gunshot wound.
Samuel Kane stood behind them.
Maya stared.
So Samuel had Evelyn.
But where was Dominic?
Then another man entered the video frame.
Older.
Gray hair.
Scar near the temple.
Julian stopped breathing.
Maya looked at him.
The man looked like Julian.
Not perfectly.
But enough.
Dominic Croft.
Alive.
He stepped toward the camera.
“Samuel thought he built my empire.”
Samuel’s face tightened behind him.
Dominic smiled.
“He was wrong.”
Then Dominic looked directly into the camera.
“Maya Torres.”
Maya felt every muscle tense.
“I’ve waited twenty-three years to meet you.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“Stay away from her!”
Dominic smiled wider.
“Gabriel.”
He looked almost pleased.
“You survived too.”
Elena whispered:
“Oh God.”
Dominic continued.
“Now that the children are finally together, perhaps we can stop pretending this is about ledgers.”
Maya frowned.
“Children?”
Julian looked at her.
Derek did too.
Dominic’s expression changed.
Almost tender.
“That’s the last secret Elena never told you.”
Maya slowly turned toward her mother.
Elena was crying.
“No.”
Maya’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
Elena shook her head.
“Not here.”
Dominic laughed through the speakers.
“Tell her.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Maya stepped closer.
“Tell me what?”
Elena looked at Julian.
Then at Maya.
Her face collapsed.
“Gabriel isn’t your father.”
Silence.
Maya stopped breathing.
“What?”
Gabriel looked shocked.
“Elena?”
She began sobbing.
Dominic’s voice filled the pier.
“Now we’re getting somewhere.”
Maya stared at her mother.
“Then who is?”
Elena could barely speak.
Dominic answered for her.
“I am.”
Nobody moved.
Julian stared at Maya.
Derek stared at Julian.
Maya felt the world disappear beneath her feet.
Dominic Croft smiled from the screen.
“And that means, Julian…”
May you like
He paused.
“…you’ve been protecting your sister this entire time.”
