Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE COMPANY TURNED AGAINST HIM

By Monday morning, Meridian was in crisis.

By Monday afternoon, Daniel Reeves was being blamed for all of it.

Three confidential clients received internal pricing data.

A competitor announced a suspiciously similar software feature.

And someone leaked documents suggesting Daniel had authorized millions in improper transactions.

The board called an emergency meeting.

I arrived at 9:03.

Daniel was already there.

So was Richard Vale.

It was the first time I had seen him in person since my father’s funeral.

Richard was seventy-one now.

Silver-haired.

Elegant.

Calm.

The kind of man whose voice never needed to rise because money had spent decades making people listen.

“Charlotte,” he said warmly.

“Richard.”

“I’m sorry we’re meeting under unpleasant circumstances.”

“You mean circumstances you created?”

Several directors looked uncomfortable.

Richard smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

“That wasn’t a compliment when you said it.”

His smile disappeared.

Daniel moved toward me.

“Don’t engage.”

Richard glanced between us.

“How touching. Marriage counseling during a corporate emergency.”

I ignored him.

The outside forensic team presented preliminary findings.

Someone had accessed Meridian’s systems using Daniel’s executive credentials.

Payments.

Downloads.

Client data.

All traced to him.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I didn’t do this.”

Richard folded his hands.

“Unfortunately, the logs disagree.”

I looked at Thomas.

“Can credentials be cloned?”

“Yes.”

“Could Ava have done it?”

“Possibly.”

Richard shook his head.

“Mrs. Reeves, the evidence suggests your husband betrayed the company. Personal loyalty should not interfere with governance.”

The hypocrisy was almost beautiful.

I leaned forward.

“You’re absolutely right.”

Daniel looked at me.

I continued.

“That’s why I move that all transactions approved by Richard Vale or entities under his control be included in the forensic review.”

Richard’s face became still.

One director said, “On what grounds?”

I slid copies of my father’s ledgers across the table.

“These.”

For the first time, Richard Vale looked afraid.

Only for half a second.

But I saw it.

He recovered.

“Those documents are decades old.”

“Some are.”

I placed Daniel’s recordings beside them.

“These aren’t.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You recorded private conversations?”

Daniel smiled without humor.

“You taught me not to trust powerful men.”

The board voted unanimously to expand the investigation.

Richard left without speaking to me.

As soon as the doors closed, Daniel whispered, “You just declared war.”

“No. He did that twelve years ago.”

That afternoon, Ava contacted us again.

She agreed to meet.

Not at Union Station.

At an underground parking structure beneath a crowded shopping district.

Daniel wanted police.

Ava refused.

We compromised with Benjamin nearby and security watching from a distance.

Ava looked different without the polished makeup and executive clothes.

Tired.

Terrified.

She approached me first.

“I’m sorry.”

I didn’t respond.

“I never meant for any of this to happen.”

“You accepted money to remove me from my own company.”

“Yes.”

“Then you accepted more money from Richard Vale.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My mother owed money.”

“To him?”

“To a company he controlled.”

“How much?”

“Almost six hundred thousand.”

Daniel swore quietly.

Ava continued.

“Richard offered to erase it if I helped him.”

“Did you sleep with Daniel?”

Daniel looked away.

Ava shook her head.

“No.”

“You kissed him.”

“Yes.”

“Was that part of the plan?”

Her silence answered.

Daniel’s face tightened.

I looked at him.

Pain crossed his expression.

He deserved it.

Ava said, “I was supposed to make him distrust you.”

“You succeeded.”

“I know.”

“Why are you helping us now?”

“Because Richard changed the agreement.”

“How?”

“He doesn’t want you removed anymore.”

My skin prickled.

“What does he want?”

Ava looked straight at me.

“He wants you arrested.”

“For what?”

“Fraud.”

She handed me a flash drive.

“He created documents showing that you used Hawthorne Legacy Trust to divert Meridian money.”

I stared at it.

“Will anyone believe them?”

“They will if the forensic auditors find them where Richard planted them.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where?”

Ava looked at him.

“Charlotte’s old office.”

My phone rang.

Thomas.

I answered.

His first words were:

“Federal agents are in the lobby.”

I looked at Ava.

Thomas continued.

May you like

“They have a warrant for Charlotte’s office.”

The trap was already closing.
