Chapter 8 - THE SECRET MY HUSBAND NEVER TOLD ME

I had spent months wondering whether Daniel was cheating.
Now I was wondering whether he had helped a billionaire destroy my father.
That was a much darker question.
We reached Denver shortly before midnight.
I did not go home.
I stayed at a hotel under Rachel’s name.
Daniel took a room on another floor.
Before entering the elevator, I turned toward him.
“Ava told me not to trust you.”
His expression barely changed.
“I assumed she would.”
“That isn’t denial.”
“No. It’s exhaustion.”
“Then give me a reason to trust you.”
Daniel looked at the security cameras overhead.
“Tomorrow morning.”
“Why not now?”
“Because what I need to show you isn’t here.”
At eight the next morning, we met inside a small storage facility near Centennial Airport.
Daniel unlocked a unit.
Inside were file boxes.
Dozens.
“What is this?”
“My insurance policy.”
“Against whom?”
“Richard Vale.”
I stared at him.
Daniel opened a box.
“Vale approached me eighteen months ago.”
“You said three months.”
“I said he invested three months ago.”
Another lie by omission.
My anger returned instantly.
“What did he want eighteen months ago?”
“He wanted Meridian’s routing algorithms.”
“Why?”
“He owns stakes in trucking, warehousing, grocery distribution, medical supply chains. If he integrated our predictive routing system across those companies, he could underprice competitors until they collapsed.”
“And you said no?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he threatened you.”
The room went quiet.
Daniel handed me a printed email.
It contained photographs of me leaving Meridian.
Running in Washington Park.
Entering our house.
A message underneath said:
Good CEOs understand which assets matter most.
I read it twice.
“When did you receive this?”
“Fourteen months ago.”
“You hid this from me for fourteen months?”
“I hired security.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe you had become controlling because you were successful.”
“I was controlling because I was scared.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
“I know.”
I looked through the boxes.
Daniel had collected emails, shareholder communications, financial records, and recorded conversations.
He had been quietly investigating Vale.
Then Ava arrived.
“She knew you were investigating him,” I said.
“I think so.”
“And she started getting close to you.”
“Yes.”
“And you kissed her anyway.”
Daniel’s face hardened with shame.
“Yes.”
That mattered.
There was no heroic version of Daniel Reeves.
He had protected me in some ways and humiliated me in others.
He had been brave in secret and cowardly at home.
People were frustratingly capable of being both.
“What happened after the kiss?”
“I told Ava it was a mistake. The next morning she showed me files claiming your father’s trust was laundering money through Meridian.”
“And you believed her.”
“I thought she had discovered something real.”
“Why not ask me?”
“Because Vale’s threats had convinced me information could put you in danger.”
I shook my head.
“You took away my ability to protect myself.”
“Yes.”
“And then you took away part of my salary.”
He almost smiled sadly.
“I’m beginning to understand why you resigned.”
“Beginning?”
That actually made me laugh.
The first real laugh I had managed in days.
It vanished quickly.
One box contained a series of audio recordings.
Daniel played one.
Richard Vale’s voice.
“You’re ambitious, Daniel. That’s why I like you.”
Daniel answered, “And that’s why I don’t trust you.”
Vale laughed.
“Smart man.”
Another recording.
Vale said:
“Your wife is the real obstacle.”
Daniel replied:
“Charlotte is the reason Meridian works.”
Vale:
“Then perhaps you should ask yourself whether you want a wife or a competitor.”
The recording stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
“He tried to turn you against me.”
“Yes.”
“And eventually he succeeded.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Partly.”
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Ava again.
This time I answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Union Station.”
“Stay there.”
“No. Listen. Richard knows about Daniel’s files.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“How?”
Ava continued.
“Because the person who helped Daniel collect them has worked for Richard the entire time.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Who helped you?”
He went pale.
“My private investigator.”
“What’s his name?”
Daniel didn’t answer quickly enough.
Then he said it.
“Mark Ellison.”
I knew that name too.
Mark Ellison was not merely Daniel’s investigator.
He was Rachel’s husband’s older brother.
My sister’s brother-in-law.
A man who had attended our wedding.
A man who had been inside Rachel’s house while I was staying there.
And when I checked my phone, I saw three missed calls from Rachel.
The fourth came immediately.
I answered.
She was crying.
“Charlotte.”
“What happened?”
“Someone broke into the house.”
My heart stopped.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“What did they take?”
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“Nothing.”
I closed my eyes.
“Then why were they there?”
“They left something on your pillow.”
“What?”
“A photograph.”
“Of what?”
Rachel whispered:
“Dad’s car at the bottom of the mountain.”

On the back were five words.
YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO LEAVE.
