Chapter 5 - THE TRUSTEE

Evelyn didn't speak for nearly ten seconds.
Then she laughed.
Too loudly.
“What an absurd thing to say.”
I set the knife down.
“Is it?”
Nolan appeared beside her.
“What did you tell my mother?”
“That I know about the trust.”
His eyes changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You don't know anything.”
“I know my grandfather created it.”
Silence.
“I know the trustee was changed.”
Evelyn's face hardened.
“And I know your name is on the amendment.”
Someone at the table whispered.
Nolan grabbed my wrist.
“Upstairs. Now.”
I pulled away.
“No.”
His grip tightened.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Nolan looked at him.
“Stay out of this.”
“No.”
Daniel's voice shook.
“I've stayed out of it for years.”
Evelyn turned toward him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the guests.
Then he said something that shattered the room.
“Mom forged Mara's trust documents.”
Evelyn went completely still.
Nolan stared at his brother.
“You're lying.”
Daniel reached into his jacket.
“I kept copies.”
He placed them on the table.
“These are the originals.”
Elise had arrived without my knowing.
She stood behind Daniel.
“I've already sent copies to the bank, the trustee's office, and law enforcement.”
Evelyn's face drained of color.
“You wouldn't.”
“I already did.”
Nolan turned toward me.
“You planned this.”
“Yes.”
“You've been spying on us?”
“No.”
I looked around the room.
“I've been documenting you.”
Then a man in a dark suit entered through the front door.
He carried a leather briefcase.
“Mrs. Hartwell?”
I turned.
“Yes?”
“My name is Robert Pierce. I'm the successor trustee named in your grandfather's original estate plan.”
Evelyn stepped backward.
“That trust was closed.”
Robert opened his briefcase.
“No, ma'am.”
He removed a document.
“It was stolen.”
The room fell silent.
“And your family has been using it as collateral for six years.”
Nolan's face went white.
Robert looked at me.
“Ms. Hartwell, your grandfather left you control of the trust when you turned thirty.”
“I turned thirty two years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't I receive it?”
Robert looked at Evelyn.
“Because someone intercepted the notification.”
I felt the entire room tilt.
Robert placed another paper on the table.
“Your grandfather also left a handwritten instruction.”
“What did it say?”
Robert looked at me.
“If anyone ever attempts to control your inheritance through fear, leave them with nothing but the truth.”
I looked at Evelyn.
For the first time, she looked old.
Not powerful.
Not wealthy.
May you like
Just frightened.
And the birthday cake remained untouched between us.
