Chapter 2 - THE CABINET OF LIES

I waited until nearly midnight.
The house had finally gone silent.
Nolan slept upstairs.
Evelyn had taken over the guest suite.
Daniel had disappeared hours earlier.
I slipped from the pantry through the kitchen and moved down the hallway barefoot.
Every floorboard seemed louder than usual.
The study door was unlocked.
Inside, moonlight fell across Nolan’s desk.
I found the cabinet behind a row of old legal books.
The brass key fit.
Click.
The first drawer contained property records.
The second contained corporate documents.
The third contained something that made my hands shake.
A folder with my name.
MARA HARTWELL.
I opened it.
Inside were copies of my tax returns, driver's license, passport, banking information, insurance policies, and even documents from my mother's estate.
Someone had been building a financial profile of me.
Not recently.
For years.
Then I found a spreadsheet.
Every deposit I had made.
Every account Nolan had accessed.
Every transfer sent to Evelyn.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Final acquisition: Hartwell residence.
I stopped breathing.
They weren't merely stealing from me.
They were planning to take my home.
Another document showed a loan application.
My signature appeared on the last page.
I had never applied for the loan.
The amount was $600,000.
The collateral was my house.
Then I heard the study door move.
I grabbed the folder.
Nolan stood in the doorway.
“What are you doing?”
My heart pounded.
“I couldn't sleep.”
His eyes moved toward the open cabinet.
“You shouldn't be in here.”
“I was looking for the bathroom.”
He laughed.
“The bathroom is across the hall.”
I forced a smile.
“I know.”
He stepped toward me.
“What did you take?”
“Nothing.”
His expression hardened.
“Mara.”
I looked directly at him.
“You locked me in a pantry tonight because your mother wanted fifty dishes.”
“So?”
“So maybe I'm starting to understand what kind of family I married into.”
His jaw tightened.
For a second, I thought he might grab me.
Instead, he smiled.
“You're tired.”
He took the folder from my hand.
“You should sleep.”
I let him.
Because he didn't notice the tiny flash drive still hidden beneath my sleeve.
Every document had already been copied.
And there was one file I hadn't opened yet.
Its title was simple.
ORIGINAL SOURCE OF FUNDS.
I returned to the bedroom and waited until Nolan fell asleep.
Then I opened the file.
The first line read:
ALL HARTWELL FAMILY ASSETS WERE FUNDED BY MARA HARTWELL.
I stared at the screen.
Then another sentence appeared.
Estimated total diverted: $3.8 million.
My hands went cold.
Six years.
Three point eight million dollars.
And tomorrow, Evelyn expected me to cook fifty dishes for her birthday.
I smiled for the first time that night.
May you like
She was going to get a celebration.
Just not the one she expected.
