PART 21 — THE LEGACY

PART 21 — THE LEGACY

The evening news covered the arrests. Brandon Prescott in handcuffs. Margaret Prescott covering her face with a designer scarf as agents escorted her into a federal vehicle. The Prescott empire, built on corruption and cruelty, shattered in a single day. Emily didn’t watch the broadcast. She was busy. Sitting in a circle of chairs at her center. Talking to women who had bruises that matched the ones she used to have. Telling them they were not alone. Showing them there was a way out. I stood by the doorway, watching her. My daughter was no longer the frightened girl in the hospital bed. She was a beacon. A leader. A survivor who turned her pain into a shield for others. I felt a profound sense of peace. Throughout my career, I had led platoons. I had strategized combat operations in war zones. I had protected my country. But protecting my daughter… That was the greatest mission of my life. A young woman walked up to me in the hallway. She was a new intake at the center. Nervous. Shaking. “Are you the security guard?” she asked quietly. I looked down at my civilian clothes. Then I looked back at Emily, who was smiling as she helped another woman fill out a restraining order. “No,” I said gently. “I’m just a mother.”
