PART 19 — THE VAULT

PART 19 — THE VAULT

The next morning. Downtown Charlotte. We stood inside First Carolina Bank. Two FBI agents stood behind us. I had made the call at midnight. The bank manager’s hands shook as he unlocked the safety deposit box. Inside lay three thick, leather-bound ledgers. The Federal agents opened them. Lists of offshore accounts. Bribes to city officials. Money laundering through shell corporations. Including the fake lawsuit filed against Emily’s foundation. The lead agent looked at me. “Colonel Hart. You’ve just handed us the entire Prescott syndicate on a silver platter.” “It wasn’t me,” I said. I looked at Emily. “It was her.” Emily stared at the books that represented decades of pain and corruption. “Can you arrest him today?” she asked. The agent smiled grimly. “We are assembling the raid team right now.” Emily nodded. “Good.” We walked out of the bank. The sunlight hit our faces. It felt warm. It felt clean. The poison of the Prescott family was finally being drawn out of our lives completely. But there was one last piece on the board. Margaret. The woman who had orchestrated it all from the shadows. My phone rang. An unknown number. I answered. “Victoria.” It was Margaret Prescott. Her voice was tight. Strangled by impending doom. “They are at my door, Victoria. The FBI is at my door.” “I know,” I said. “Please,” the proud matriarch begged. “I’ll give you anything. Just call them off.”
