Chapter 6 - THE VILLA THAT SURVIVED THE FIRE

:

The lakehouse looked ruined.

Blackened walls.

Broken windows.

Collapsed roof.

The public report said nothing remained.

But my father's key opened a hidden basement.

We descended.

The room was untouched.

A vault.

Three locks.

One for my fingerprint.

One for Isabelle.

One for Daniel.

Daniel pressed his palm.

The third lock remained dark.

Then Chloe walked forward.

Her tiny hand touched the scanner.

The light turned green.

The vault opened.

Everyone stared.

Inside was a single table.

A stack of files.

A silver suitcase.

And a photograph.

Lily.

Alive.

Older.

Standing beside a woman.

I couldn't breathe.

“She grew.”

Isabelle smiled.

“She did.”

“Where is she?”

“On her way.”

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was alive all these years.”

“Yes.”

I was furious.

But before I could speak, the lights came on.

A screen activated.

My father's image appeared.

“Kaelen.”

I swallowed.

“This is the final recording.”

He spoke calmly.

“Adrian believes the Sterling empire belongs to him.”

“He is wrong.”

“The empire belongs to the children.”

I looked at Chloe.

My father continued.

“I knew the explosion would happen.”

My heart stopped.

“You knew?”

“I allowed it.”

Silence.

“What?”

He explained.

He had staged a controlled disappearance to flush Adrian's network into the open.

But Adrian had betrayed everyone.

He sabotaged the escape.

The explosion became real.

Daniel barely survived.

Lily disappeared.

My father was forced to die publicly to protect the children.

The funeral was staged.

Everything had been an enormous deception.

“But I made one mistake,” my father said.

“Adrian survived.”

The screen changed.

A list of names.

Adrian's collaborators.

Judges.

Bankers.

Police officials.

And one name at the top.

Victor Sterling.

I froze.

“Victor?”

My father's younger brother.

The man I had trusted.

The man who had advised me after my father's death.

The man who had told me to accept Lily's death.

“He is the architect,” my father continued.

“Adrian is only his weapon.”

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal was larger.

The person behind the explosion wasn't my brother.

It was my uncle.

A second screen activated.

A live video.

Victor stood inside the same villa.

Behind him—

Lily.

Alive.

Bound to a chair.

My heart stopped.

“Let her go.”

Victor smiled.

“Come and take her.”

Isabelle grabbed my arm.

“It's a trap.”

“I don't care.”

Victor looked into the camera.

“Bring the locket.”

I looked at Chloe.

The locket was gone.

She had it.

“Why does he want it?”

Daniel answered.

“Because the locket contains the final authorization.”

“Then he wants Chloe.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my niece.

“No.”

Victor's voice came through the speakers.

“If you refuse, Lily dies.”

I stared at the screen.

Then at Chloe.

The little girl who had asked to sit at my table.

The little girl who had brought a dead man's promise back to me.

I knew what I had to do.

“We go.”

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Kaelen.”

“I've lost her once.”

I looked at Lily's face on the screen.

“I won't lose her again.”

The door behind us opened.

A young woman stepped inside.

Auburn curls.

Hazel eyes.

She looked exactly like the child I remembered.

My throat closed.

“Dad?”

I couldn't move.

Lily ran toward me.

I caught her.

She was real.

Warm.

Alive.

She cried into my chest.

“I knew you'd come.”

I held her tighter.

Then Victor's voice echoed from the speakers.

“Beautiful.”

We turned.

Victor stood on the balcony above us.

Gun in hand.

“You finally gathered the heirs.”

Marcus raised his weapon.

Victor smiled.

“Drop it.”

Everyone froze.

He looked at Chloe.

Then Lily.

Then Isabelle.

Then me.

“You children were always the problem.”

He smiled.

“And now you're all in one room.”

I stepped forward.

“Why?”

“Because your father chose you.”

“And you wanted the empire.”

“No.”

May you like

Victor's smile widened.

“I wanted the bloodline.”
