Chapter 9 - THE CHAIR RICHARD LEFT FOR GRACE

Grace laughed when she first read the clause.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was exhausted.

“I don't want this company.”

Maya answered:

“That may be why he chose you.”

Richard's succession memorandum gave Grace temporary chair authority if three conditions occurred simultaneously:

Material fraud by a senior executive.

Emergency debt event.

Failure of incumbent leadership to disclose conflicts.

All three had happened.

Robert.

Bridge loan.

Ethan's affair and misuse of corporate expense systems.

Grace could legally assume interim board leadership for ninety days.

Ethan stared at her.

“What are you going to do?”

She expected challenge.

Instead, he waited.

“Take it.”

He blinked.

“Grace—”

“Not because I want your job.”

She placed one hand on her stomach.

“Because eight thousand employees shouldn't lose theirs because your family treats companies like chessboards.”

Declan smiled slightly.

Ethan noticed.

Didn't like it.

Grace chaired her first meeting the next morning.

She suspended Robert permanently pending prosecution.

Approved independent audit.

Rejected Pierce's acquisition offer for now.

Accepted emergency financing—but renegotiated terms.

One board seat.

No equity conversion.

No personal guarantees.

Declan agreed.

Ethan watched.

Grace was good.

Not theatrical.

Prepared.

She read everything.

Asked questions nobody else wanted.

By afternoon, Calloway's stock stabilized.

Then Vanessa returned to the United States and turned over evidence.

Rachel Reed had coordinated the loan trap.

Robert supplied inside information.

But another executive fed them monthly forecasts.

CFO?

No.

General counsel?

No.

Vanessa showed the messages.

Sender:

EC.

Ethan Calloway.

Grace stared.

“That's impossible.”

Ethan looked equally confused.

The emails came from his account.

Authenticated.

Some contained details only he knew.

Did he send them drunk?

Carelessly?

Through Vanessa?

He denied it.

Then cybersecurity found the source.

The account logins came from Ethan's home office.

At times Ethan was traveling.

Someone with physical access had used his computer.

Grace thought of the household.

Staff.

Assistants.

Family.

Then one date stood out.

The night of their anniversary.

Ethan had been in New York.

Grace had been home.

One login occurred at 11:43 p.m.

Security cameras showed exactly one visitor entering Ethan's office wing.

May you like

His mother.

Margaret Calloway.
