Chapter 14 - Walking Without Chains

Six months after the sentencing, the morning sun rose over the majestic snow-capped peak of Mount Hood, casting golden rays across the city of Portland.
I walked onto the outdoor observation deck of the Vance Maritime Tower, completely unassisted, having retired my carbon-fiber cane two weeks prior.
The crisp autumn breeze rustled my tailored navy blazer as I looked out over the bustling shipping terminals along the Willamette River.
Dozens of modern cargo vessels bearing the newly restored silver crest of VANCE GLOBAL LOGISTICS were moving smoothly through the deep-water channels.
The double glass doors opened, and Harrison stepped out onto the terrace, holding a leather folder containing the annual corporate performance report.
“The employee pension fund has been fully replenished with a twenty-million-dollar surplus, Valerie,” Harrison reported with immense joy.
“And our new profit-sharing program just distributed twelve thousand dollars to every dockworker and logistics coordinator in the company.”
I smiled warmly, taking the folder and looking over the stellar financial audits.
“The company belongs to the people who sweat for it, Harrison; not the parasites who hoard it in offshore vaults.”
Detective Marcus Vance walked out onto the deck, wearing a sharp grey suit, holding three cups of freshly brewed hazelnut coffee.
“The state legislature just unanimously passed the Valerie Vance Domestic Protection Act this morning,” Marcus announced proudly.
“The law mandates immediate felony arrests and lifetime asset freezes for any domestic abuser who inflicts grievous bodily harm.”
I took a sip of the warm coffee, looking out over the city that had once felt like my personal prison.
The scars on my right shin were permanent, but they no longer brought pain; they were medals of survival, reminders of the night I crawled through the dark to reclaim my life.

“We did it, Marcus,” I whispered, watching the sunlight dance across the river.
“We turned their darkness into an unshakeable light.”
