Chapter 13 - The Judgement of Steel

Judge Eleanor Cross adjusted her black judicial robes, leaning forward over the high mahogany bench to pronounce the historic sentences.

Her voice resonated through the packed courtroom with the unyielding, solemn weight of the entire federal judiciary.

“In my four decades on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed such cold, calculated, and sadistic cruelty disguised as familial authority,” Judge Cross stated.

“Evelyn Vance, for the attempted murder of Harrison Vance by chemical poisoning, the aggravated torture of Valerie Vance, and multi-state financial racketeering, you are sentenced to forty years in federal maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole.”

Evelyn collapsed forward onto the defense table, letting out an ear-piercing wail of absolute despair as two female federal marshals secured her arms.

“You will serve your sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, where you will remain under strict medical confinement,” the judge continued mercilessly.

Judge Cross then turned her piercing gaze toward Preston, whose entire body was shaking with violent, pathetic sobs.

“Preston Vance, for your direct leadership in federal corporate fraud, felony domestic mayhem, and conspiracy to commit murder, you are sentenced to thirty-five years in federal prison without parole.”

“You will be remanded immediately to the United States Penitentiary in Victorville, California.”

Judge Cross brought her heavy wooden gavel down three times: BAM! BAM! BAM!

“Court is officially adjourned!”

The heavy metal holding cell doors behind the defense table swung open with a resounding clang.

Federal marshals seized Evelyn by her orange jumpsuit, lifting her screaming, limp body off the chair and dragging her toward the prisoner transport exit.

Preston looked back over his shoulder one final time, his tear-filled eyes begging for a shred of mercy, for a single nod of forgiveness from where I sat.

I did not blink.

I did not frown.

I met his gaze with calm, unbreakable serenity as the heavy steel doors slammed shut, locking both monsters away in the cold dark forever.
