Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE CAMERAS WENT DARK

At 1:17 a.m., every security camera on my floor went black.
I woke to silence.
No nurses.
No footsteps.
Nothing.
Then I heard the door handle move.
I reached for the emergency button.
The door opened.
A man stepped inside wearing a hospital maintenance uniform.
He froze when he saw me awake.
“Ma'am?”
I recognized him.
He had delivered my meals earlier that evening.
But something was wrong.
His badge was upside down.
I pressed the emergency alarm.
He lunged toward me.
Before he reached the bed, my father's security officer tackled him to the floor.
Two federal agents rushed in.
The man fought violently.
Then they found a syringe inside his pocket.
My stomach turned.
After he was arrested, an investigator questioned him.
He refused to speak.
Until they showed him a photograph.
Richard Vance.
The man's face collapsed.
“I was told she wouldn't survive.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who told you?”
He stared at the floor.
“Someone on her father's security detail.”
My father went completely still.
“Name.”
The man whispered it.
It was one of Dad's most trusted officers.
A man who had protected our family for eleven years.
He had access to every schedule.
Every vehicle.
Every hospital transfer.
Every security code.
The betrayal was almost impossible to comprehend.
But the officer wasn't acting alone.
His phone contained encrypted messages.
Hundreds of them.
The sender used one name.
MOTHER.
My mother saw the messages.
Her face changed.
“That's not me.”
Rebecca frowned.
“Then who is it?”
My mother stared at the screen.
“I don't know.”
The investigator opened the final message.
It had been sent two hours before the attack.
THE CHILD MUST BE BORN UNDER OUR CONTROL.
I felt my daughter move.
I placed both hands over my stomach.
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“No one is taking my child.”
My father stepped beside me.
“They won't.”
The next morning, the federal government froze Vance Global's assets.
The company's stock collapsed.
Executives resigned.
Banks demanded repayment.
And Julian's carefully constructed empire began falling apart.
But then something unexpected happened.
Catherine Vale, the former compliance officer, requested immunity in exchange for testimony.
She arrived carrying three boxes.
“These contain the records your husband never wanted anyone to see.”
I opened the first box.
Invoices.
Wire transfers.
Private contracts.
The second contained photographs.
The third contained a handwritten journal.
It belonged to Richard.
On the final page was a sentence that made everyone in the room silent.
Genevieve must never learn that Julian is not my son.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What?”
She turned the page.
Beneath the sentence was another.
He is Elena's son.
My mother's face went white.
Julian wasn't Richard's son.
May you like
He was my mother's child.
And suddenly the entire story changed.
