Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

My mother's name was Elena Hart.
Six years earlier, I had stood beside her grave in a black dress while rain soaked the cemetery.
I remembered every flower.
Every condolence.
Every tear.
I had believed she was gone.
Now Julian was telling me she was alive.
I refused to believe him.
Then Rebecca placed a file in front of me.
“Your mother's death certificate was issued in Nevada.”
I stared at it.
“What's wrong with it?”
“The physician listed on the certificate retired two years before your mother's supposed death.”
My fingers went cold.
Dad entered the room.
He looked older than I had ever seen him.
“Your mother wasn't buried.”
“What?”
Dad sat across from me.
“The casket was sealed.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I believed she was protecting you.”
“From what?”
He looked away.
“From Richard.”
My mother and Richard had known each other before I was born.
They had worked together.
They had built the original financial structure behind Vance Global.
Then they betrayed each other.
At least, that's what Dad had always told me.
But the truth was darker.
My mother had discovered Richard was moving money through shell charities.
She threatened to expose him.
Richard threatened our family.
So my mother disappeared.
But she didn't disappear alone.
She took something with her.
A master ledger.
Every illegal transaction.
Every secret account.
Every bribe.
Every person involved.
Including Julian.
Including my mother.
I couldn't breathe.
“My mother helped him?”
Dad nodded slowly.
“She believed she could control Richard.”
“She couldn't.”
“No.”
The door opened.
A federal agent stepped inside.
“We found her.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Charleston.”
That afternoon, I saw my mother for the first time in six years.
She looked older.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was thinner.
But when she saw me, her eyes filled with tears.
“Genevieve.”
I wanted to slap her.
I wanted to hug her.
I did neither.
“You let me bury you.”
She cried.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You let me believe my mother was dead.”
“If Richard knew you were my daughter, he would have used you.”
“He did.”
She closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Then she reached into her handbag.
She placed a small black key on the table.
“This opens the vault where I hid the ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“The one Richard has spent twenty years trying to find.”
I stared at the key.
“What does it contain?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
Her voice dropped.
“That the Vance empire was never legally his.”
My breath caught.
“Whose was it?”
She looked at me.
“Yours.”
The room went silent.
My mother explained that my grandfather had created the original holding company in my name before I was born.
Richard had manipulated my parents into signing management agreements.
He had built an empire using assets that legally belonged to my family.
For decades, he had lived like a billionaire while hiding the truth.
And now he wanted the one person standing between him and everything—
me.
Then my mother leaned closer.
“There's one more thing.”
“What?”
“Richard knows you're alive.”
I stared at her.
“How?”
She looked toward the window.
May you like
“Because he has someone inside your security team.”
That night, someone tried to enter my hospital room.
