Chapter 9 - EVELYN'S PLAN STARTED BEFORE JULIAN'S

Serena arrived in Bangkok the following morning.
I cried when I saw her.
Not because she was family.
Because Evelyn’s note had said:
Let’s see who comes for you now.
Someone had.
Not out of blood.
Out of loyalty.
Serena hugged me once.
Then immediately asked:
“Ready to go home?”
“Yes.”
Before leaving, she showed me one final report.
Vance Strategic’s financial crisis had not started with Julian.
It started with Evelyn.
Five years earlier, she convinced Julian to invest in a coastal development partnership.
The land deal failed.
Then another.
Then another.
Julian kept refinancing because admitting the losses would mean admitting his mother had been wrong.
Evelyn put in her retirement money.
Julian guaranteed loans.
They became financially tied together.
Then they discovered my thirty-fifth birthday transfer.
I stared at the timeline.
“So she planned this.”
“She pushed it.”
“Julian agreed.”
“Yes.”
Important distinction.
Evelyn manipulated him.
Julian still chose me as the person to sacrifice.
Then Serena showed me an email from eight years earlier.
Before Julian proposed to me.
From Evelyn to a private investigator.
SUBJECT:
AMELIA CARTER.
My skin went cold.
“Why was she investigating me before we were engaged?”
The report contained:
My parents’ estate.
Carter Meridian.
My trust.
Expected transfer ages.
Property.
Family office structure.
Even my lack of close relatives.
At the bottom, Evelyn had written:
She could be very good for Julian if he handles this correctly.
I stopped breathing.
Julian and I had always told the story of how we met as accidental.
A charity dinner.
One empty seat.
One conversation.
Apparently Evelyn had been researching me months before that dinner.
“Did Julian know?”
Serena didn’t answer immediately.
“We found a reply.”
From Julian.
ONE LINE:
I’m not marrying a balance sheet, Mom.
Relief hit me.
For about two seconds.
Then another email.
Seven months later.
JULIAN:
You were right about Carter Meridian. But don’t ever mention this to Amelia.
My marriage had not begun as a financial plot.

But at some point, my husband learned exactly what I was worth.
And decided keeping that knowledge secret was acceptable.
