Chapter 1 - THE TWO WORDS JULIAN FORGOT ABOUT

I went back downstairs barefoot.
The receptionist, a woman named Nisa, looked up immediately.
“Mrs. Vance?”
“I need to make an international call.”
“Of course.”
“I don’t have the number written down.”
That part was true.
I had memorized it eleven years earlier.
My father insisted.
At the time, I thought he was being paranoid.
The number belonged to Carter Family Office, the private firm that had managed my parents’ estate after they died.
I hadn’t spoken to anyone there in almost two years.
Julian knew the office existed.
What he did not know was that my father had created an emergency protocol after a frightening business-security incident when I was a teenager.
The protocol had one purpose.
If I was ever abroad, isolated from identification, money, communication, or safe transportation, I could activate it without documents.
Nisa handed me the phone.
I dialed from memory.
A recorded voice answered.
“Carter Global Response.”
I swallowed.
“My name is Amelia Carter Vance.”
“Please provide authentication.”
I closed my eyes.
“Blue Lantern.”
Silence.
Then the line changed.
No music.
No recording.
A woman answered.
“Amelia?”
I nearly cried when I recognized her.
Serena Holt.
My father’s former security director.
“Where are you?”
“Bangkok.”
“Are you safe?”
“I think so.”
“Is Maya with you?”
“No.”
Her voice immediately sharpened.
“Tell me everything.”
I did.
Julian.
Evelyn.
Maya.
My missing passport.
My missing phone.
The canceled flight.
The notes.
Serena did not interrupt once.
When I finished, she said:
“Do not leave the hotel alone.”
“What happens now?”
“Blue Lantern activates your emergency legal, financial, travel, and identity protections.”
I almost laughed from relief.
“I just need a passport and a flight.”
“No.”
Her voice became quieter.
“You need much more than that.”
“What does that mean?”
“Julian accessed Carter Family Trust systems at 3:12 this morning.”
My blood turned cold.
“Why?”
“He submitted a request claiming you suffered an acute psychiatric episode in Thailand.”
I gripped the desk.
“What?”
“He says you are temporarily incapable of managing financial or parental decisions.”
“That’s insane.”
“I know.”
“What was he requesting?”
Serena hesitated.
“Emergency authority over your trust.”
I stopped breathing.
“How much?”
“Four point eight million dollars.”
The lobby seemed to tilt.
Julian had not only stranded me.
He had tried to declare me mentally incompetent while doing it.
May you like
And according to Serena, the request included medical documentation.
From a doctor I had never seen.
