Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT MY FATHER STOPPED BREATHING

For eleven years, I had accepted the words natural causes without questioning them.

Now I watched Victoria Hart give instructions to a physician while my father lay dying upstairs.

I felt as though the walls were closing around me.

"Play it again."

Daniel hesitated.

"Maya—"

"Please."

He replayed the final thirty seconds.

Victoria's voice was unmistakable.

"Make sure the death certificate says cardiac arrest."

Nathan Caldwell replied quietly.

"The underlying condition will support that finding."

Victoria looked toward the staircase.

"And the medication?"

Nathan glanced at the camera.

Then reached up.

The recording went dark.

I stood frozen.

My father's death was no longer simply a painful memory.

It was a question demanding answers.

Rachel spoke carefully.

"We need law enforcement to review this immediately. The recording raises serious concerns, but the full medical evidence will determine what happened."

I nodded.

"Then give them everything."

That evening, investigators reviewed the recordings and requested relevant medical and pharmacy records.

Dr. Caldwell's old treatment notes became a priority.

Meanwhile, Daniel continued tracing the questionable transfers.

At 9:16, he called Margaret and me.

"I found something."

We were sitting in her kitchen.

"What?" I asked.

"The payments to Caldwell didn't begin with your medical report."

My stomach tightened.

"When did they begin?"

"Eleven years ago."

I closed my eyes.

Daniel continued.

"Several payments were made through a company connected to Victoria. They started shortly before your father's death."

Rachel joined the call.

"Have you preserved the supporting records?"

"Yes."

"What are the payment descriptions?"

Daniel paused.

"Medical consulting, document review, and private patient management."

I stared at Margaret.

Private patient management.

What had Nathan Caldwell been managing?

Before I could ask, Rachel's phone rang.

She stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her expression was grave.

"Investigators have located Dr. Caldwell."

My heart pounded.

"Has he been arrested?"

"He's being questioned. I can't comment on what may follow."

We waited.

Minutes felt like hours.

Then Rachel received another update.

Nathan had agreed to provide investigators with information concerning Robert Hart's final treatment.

He reportedly acknowledged that he had altered medical documentation.

More importantly, he claimed Victoria had directed him to conceal information concerning medication administered shortly before Robert's collapse.

I covered my mouth.

Margaret moved closer.

"Maya."

I shook my head.

"My father knew."

She looked at me.

"He knew they were coming after him."

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

"And I married one of them."

Margaret held my hand.

I stayed quiet for a long time.

Then something shifted.

I realized my father had spent his final days trying to protect me.

He hadn't failed because he was weak.

He'd been betrayed by people who knew exactly how to exploit his trust.

And I wasn't going to let them erase what he'd tried to do.

"Rachel," I said, "I want the authorities to receive every document we've found."

"They will."

"All of it."

"Yes."

The following morning, financial investigators contacted Julian and Celeste concerning the suspected fraud.

Victor Lang was also questioned.

The insurance application was undergoing forensic review.

The altered trust documents had been flagged.

And Victoria's attorney had been notified of the developing investigation.

For the first time, the people who had controlled the secrets were being forced to answer questions.

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"Yes?"

"My name is Allison Reed. I worked as your father's home nurse."

I went still.

"How did you get my number?"

"Your father gave it to me years ago. I was afraid to use it."

My pulse quickened.

"Why are you calling now?"

"Because I heard the investigation has reopened."

"What do you know?"

She began crying.

"Your father was still conscious when Dr. Caldwell arrived."

I gripped the phone.

"What?"

"He asked me to call an ambulance. He said someone had given him medication he wasn't supposed to take."

I could barely breathe.

"Then what happened?"

Allison's voice broke.

"Victoria sent me away."

"Why?"

A long silence.

May you like

Then Allison whispered the secret that changed everything.

"Because Julian Bennett was already upstairs with your father."
