Chapter 10 - THE DAUGHTER NOBODY KNEW EXISTED

My father had another daughter.

At least, someone wanted me to believe he did.

I stared at the name Emily Hart.

"How old is she?"

Daniel checked the file.

"Thirty-two."

Three years younger than me.

I felt the familiar sting of betrayal.

My father had been the one person I believed I could trust without question.

Had he been hiding an entire family?

Margaret studied the document.

"Maya, don't jump to conclusions. We haven't authenticated this file or the claimed relationship."

I nodded.

She was right.

But my heart wasn't interested in caution.

"Find her," I said.

Daniel contacted our investigators.

Within hours, they located an Emily Hart living in Milwaukee.

She worked as a public school counselor.

She had never been employed by Hartwell Industries.

She had no obvious connection to Julian or Celeste.

And her financial records showed no suspicious transfers.

That afternoon, Rachel arranged a voluntary conversation.

Emily appeared on a secure video call.

She had dark hair, thoughtful brown eyes, and an expression that reminded me unexpectedly of my mother.

Not Victoria.

My real mother, Eleanor.

Emily looked nervous.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"Please call me Maya."

She nodded.

"I was told there might be a question about my family."

I took a breath.

"Do you know Robert Hart?"

Her expression changed.

"Yes."

My stomach tightened.

"How?"

Emily hesitated.

"He was my guardian when I was younger."

Silence.

"Your guardian?"

She nodded.

"My mother died when I was eight. Robert helped place me with a relative and supported my education."

I stared at her.

"Was he your father?"

Emily looked surprised.

"No."

"Are you certain?"

She nodded.

"My biological parents were Daniel and Susan Miller. I changed my last name to Hart as an adult because Robert helped me when I had nobody."

I struggled to speak.

"Why didn't he tell me about you?"

Emily smiled sadly.

"He said you were dealing with your mother's illness and didn't want to place another responsibility on your shoulders."

Tears filled my eyes.

That sounded like Dad.

He'd spent his entire life quietly helping people.

Sometimes without telling anyone.

Emily continued.

"He paid for my college tuition. But he never treated me like a charity case."

My throat tightened.

"Did anyone ever ask you to sign documents concerning Hartwell Industries?"

Her expression changed.

"Yes."

I leaned forward.

"Who?"

"A woman named Victoria Hart."

My heart pounded.

"What did she want?"

"She contacted me after Robert died. She said he'd intended to leave me a small educational trust."

"Did you sign anything?"

Emily looked uncomfortable.

"She sent forms. I signed a few pages."

Rachel leaned closer.

"Do you still have copies?"

"Yes."

Within minutes, Emily emailed them.

Daniel opened the attachments.

The first documents were ordinary acknowledgments.

But the final page contained something much more serious.

An assignment of beneficial interest.

Emily's signature appeared beneath a statement suggesting she was entitled to a substantial portion of Hart Family Holdings.

Emily stared at the screen.

"I never agreed to that."

Rachel asked carefully, "Were those words on the document when you signed it?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"I only signed a receipt for a small scholarship distribution."

I looked at Margaret.

Victoria had apparently used Emily's gratitude toward my father to obtain signatures for a fraudulent ownership claim.

But why?

Daniel opened another email.

It had been sent from Victor Lang to Celeste.

EMILY IS THE BACKUP BENEFICIARY. IF MAYA CHALLENGES THE TRUST, WE ACTIVATE PLAN B.

I felt cold.

Then a second attachment opened.

A confidential document titled:

PROPOSED PETITION FOR REMOVAL OF MAYA HART BENNETT AS TRUSTEE.

It cited the same fabricated medical evaluation prepared by Dr. Caldwell.

And it named Emily Hart as the proposed replacement.
