Chapter 13 - CHLOE’S LAST REQUEST

A year after the canceled wedding, Chloe asked for one thing.
Not money.
Not access.
A chance to apologize to Valeria and Sofia.
Rachel forwarded the request.
My first reaction:
No.
Then Dr. Morris asked:
“What do the girls want?”
Right.
Not what I wanted.
Valeria said:
“Can I read a letter?”
“Yes.”
Sofia wanted no contact.
Also yes.
Chloe wrote separately to Valeria.
No excuses.
At least not obvious ones.
I was jealous of your mother’s place in your life.
I was jealous of Marisol.
I told myself I was trying to create a new family, but I was actually trying to control what family meant.
Valeria read quietly.
Then:
She scared me.
“I know.”
“I don’t forgive her.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Maybe later.”
“Maybe.”
Then she folded the letter.
No dramatic healing.
That was healthier.
Financially, the Briar Rose review ended with repayment and settlement.
Chloe’s brother lost our business.
Some vendors were reimbursed.
The recovered jewelry went into secure trusts for the girls.
I gave Valeria Elena’s sapphire bracelet on her tenth birthday.
Not to wear yet.
To know it existed.
Sofia received Elena’s pearl earrings when she was older.
No one could quietly remove their mother from storage again.
Then I learned something about myself.
I had once believed protecting wealth meant controlling access.
Now I understood protecting people meant controlling power.
So my family office changed policies.
Household employees received direct reporting channels.
No fiancé, spouse, relative, or household manager could intercept complaints involving themselves.
Children’s caregivers received written scopes.
No blurred twenty-four-hour emotional labor treated as “part of the family.”
That phrase had become dangerous to me.
Marisol was family-like to the girls.
Still an employee.
Still entitled to wages, days off, career plans, and privacy.
Then the company board asked why I cared so much about domestic-staff policy.
I answered:
“Because power behaves badly when nobody can report around it.”
No one argued.
Then Rachel brought me one final document connected to Chloe.
An unsent email found in the estate portal.
To my account.
Drafted the night before I pretended to fly to Canada.
ALEXANDER,
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT CHLOE AND THE GIRLS.
Sender:
Marisol.
She had been planning to confront me the exact day I decided to spy on her.
If Chloe had not accused Marisol first, the truth might have reached me anyway.
May you like
Which meant my clever hidden-camera test had not saved the family.
A woman with far less power than me had already decided silence could not continue.
