Chapter 1 - THE FIRST LIE THE CAMERAS EXPOSED

I was out of the security room before Hector could stop me.
“Mr. Vance—”
“Call the house team. Nobody leaves the property.”
I moved through the service corridor so quickly I barely remembered opening the door into the main living room.
Chloe still had her back to me.
Marisol stood between her and my daughters.
Valeria was holding Sofia’s hand.
Sofia’s wrist was red where Chloe had grabbed it.
Then Valeria saw me.
Her face changed.
Not relief.
Terror.
“Daddy?”
Everyone turned.
Chloe’s hand dropped immediately.
For one second, nobody spoke.
Then her entire expression transformed.
“Alexander!”
Sweet voice.
Wide eyes.
The woman from the monitors vanished.
“What are you doing here?”
I walked past her.
Straight to Sofia.
I took the stuffed rabbit down from the shelf and handed it to her.
She grabbed it against her chest.
Then I crouched.
“Did she hurt you?”
Sofia looked toward Chloe before answering.
That glance nearly destroyed me.
Valeria stepped closer.
“Don’t make her tell while Chloe’s here.”
My nine-year-old daughter had just asked me to remove my fiancée before her little sister felt safe speaking.
I stood.
“Hector.”
He entered with two security staff.
Chloe stared.
“You brought security into this?”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“You brought them into it.”
She laughed nervously.
“This is insane. Sofia was throwing a tantrum, and Marisol interfered.”
Marisol said nothing.
Chloe pointed at her.
“There! Look at her. She’s been poisoning them against me.”
I almost hated myself because twenty-four hours earlier, I might have believed that.
Now I had forty-five minutes of footage.
I said:
“Give Hector your house keys.”
Chloe’s face went blank.
“What?”
“You’re leaving.”
“Alexander, we’re getting married.”
“Not today.”
She stepped toward me.
“This is my home too.”
“No.”
The answer came more easily than I expected.
“It isn’t.”
She looked at the girls.
Then at Marisol.
And something ugly flashed across her face.
“You’re going to throw away our marriage over hired help?”
Valeria flinched.
I saw it.
“Hector.”
He moved between us.
Chloe finally reached into her purse and dropped the keys onto the marble table.
Then she said:
“You’re making the biggest mistake of your life.”
Maybe.
But for once, it would be mine.
After she left, I expected my daughters to run into my arms.
They didn’t.
Sofia stayed beside Marisol.
Valeria stood between all of us.
That was the punishment I deserved.
Trust does not return because the dangerous person exits the room.
Then Hector called me back into security.
“Sir, there’s more.”
He pulled footage from four days earlier.
Chloe entered Marisol’s staff room while Marisol was grocery shopping.
In her hand was a small velvet jewelry box.
She opened Marisol’s dresser.
Slid something beneath a stack of folded shirts.
Then left.
I recognized the box.
Chloe’s missing diamond earrings.
The same earrings she had accused Marisol of stealing.

Chloe had never been trying to help me discover a thief.
She had been creating one.
