Chapter 6 - THE DEAD UNCLE WHO BUILT THE WAR

Marcello Falcone had been erased from the family history.

No photographs in the estate.

No stories at Sunday dinners.

No grave.

Vivian had never heard his name.

Antonio had.

“Vittorio’s younger brother.”

“What happened?”

“He disappeared after a federal investigation in 1994.”

“Dead?”

“Supposedly.”

The flash drive contained ledgers.

Audio files.

Scanned letters.

Nathan had spent years documenting a criminal structure separate from Vittorio’s.

Marcello controlled contractors, union officials, judges, and shell companies.

A shadow network inside the Falcone empire.

“What did Dad discover?”

“That Marcello was stealing from Vittorio.”

“That sounds suicidal.”

“It was worse.”

Marcello was also quietly feeding information to rival families.

Creating wars.

Then buying weakened businesses afterward.

He profited when Falcones bled.

Nathan discovered him.

Elena accidentally became connected to the investigation.

Then Nathan died.

Vivian scrolled through files until one name appeared repeatedly.

M. PETROV.

The contract killer linked to Antonio.

Another file showed payments.

Not from Antonio.

From Marcello.

Vivian looked at him.

“You were framed.”

“Yes.”

“For seven years.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you prove it?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“Two prosecutors died.”

Vivian stopped asking.

Then one audio file appeared.

NATHAN / LORENZO — FINAL NIGHT.

Vivian’s hand froze.

Antonio looked at her.

“You don’t have to listen now.”

“Yes, I do.”

She pressed play.

Her father’s voice filled the room.

“You don’t know what he is, Lorenzo.”

Then Lorenzo.

You’re asking me to betray my father.

Nathan answered:

I’m asking you to survive him.

Vivian shut her eyes.

Lorenzo sounded so young.

Angry.

Afraid.

Then Nathan said:

Vivian will be caught in this eventually.

Lorenzo’s voice changed instantly.

Leave her out of it.

You care about her.

Silence.

Vivian stopped breathing.

Nathan continued.

Then prove it.

Lorenzo whispered:

How?

Take the key.

Protect the trust.

If I die, keep Vittorio away from her.

Another pause.

Lorenzo:

Why me?

Nathan:

Because she already notices you when you think she doesn’t.

Vivian covered her mouth.

Years before their marriage.

Her father knew.

The recording continued.

Then tires outside.

Nathan’s voice became sharp.

Someone found us.

Lorenzo:

Stay here.

A door slammed.

Gunfire.

Then chaos.

The recording ended.

Vivian’s hands shook.

Lorenzo had tried to protect her father.

Not betray him.

Antonio said nothing.

He did not need to.

Then another file automatically opened.

Security footage.

Nathan leaving the safe house the next morning.

Alive.

A man waited beside a car.

Older.

Silver-haired.

Vivian leaned closer.

Not Vittorio.

Marcello.

The supposedly dead uncle.

Nathan got into his car voluntarily.

Then footage ended.

Vivian’s phone rang.

Lorenzo.

This time she answered.

Silence on both ends.

Finally:

“Vivian.”

She closed her eyes.

“I heard the recording.”

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

“What recording?”

“My father.”

A long pause.

“Then you know I failed him.”

“You tried.”

“I gave Vittorio the address.”

“You were manipulated.”

“I still did it.”

She appreciated that he did not run from responsibility.

Then Lorenzo said:

“My father told me your mother killed Nathan.”

“He lied.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because somebody just broke into the estate.”

Vivian stood.

“What?”

“Three guards are dead.”

Her blood ran cold.

“Who?”

“We caught one man alive.”

“Who sent him?”

Lorenzo’s answer came quietly.

“He said Marcello.”

Vivian gripped the phone.

“He’s alive?”

“Yes.”

“And Vivian?”

“What?”

“They weren’t here for me.”

Her heart stopped.

“They came for your wedding ring.”

The ring she had left on Lorenzo’s sideboard.

Inside the band, hidden beneath the setting, was something neither of them had ever noticed.

A microfilm capsule.
